I love Dishwalla's acoustic version of "Counting Blue Cars". I don't know much about this version, like where it was recorded, or if it was even for MTV's Unplugged show or whatever, but I think it's so much better than the album version.
Anyone have any examples of acoustic or "unplugged" versions that outdid the originals?

I'm a pretty big fan of Nine Inch Nail's Live and Deconstructed in Chicago. During a stop on the Fragility tour, they recorded a small set of mostly acoustic songs for a small audience.
1. Even Deeper
2. Hurt (Take 1)
3. Hurt (Take 2)
4. Something I Can Never Have
5. The Big Come Down
6. The Day The World Went Away
7. The Fragile

Stevie Ray Vaughn...Pride and Joy
He did it with a 12 string on MTV unplugged and it sounded awesome. The sad thing was mtv would replay 10,000 Maniacs' performance almost every day but Stevie's gig was hardly ever repeated even after his death.

KISS- I Still Love You, Sure Know Something

Jellyfish did an acoustic version of The Move's "I Can Hear the Grass Grow" that I greatly prefer over the original (a song I already liked a lot, actually).
In the mid-90s, I was really big into those radio station charity CDs where the station would collect different performances various artists did acoustic in their studio. (That sentence is riddled with grammatical errors, but hopefully you get the gist. Too lazy to fix it.) Anyway, one of those CDs was from a station in Boston and had an acoustic version of Barenaked Ladies doing "The Old Apartment". I never liked that song, but I thought it sounded fantastic acoustic.
Speaking of Canucks, I've been listening to an acoustic version of "Heatseeker Boy" by Mike Ford a lot lately. Dunno if I prefer it to the full Fruvous version, but it certainly has a charm...

I'm with you on the KISS thing, too, except my fave from that session is Everytime I Look At You. Still gives me a little chill when the strings come in the first time after the first chorus.

When U2 would play "Staring at the Sun" as part of their acoustic set during the Popmart tour in '97, I thought it trounced the original studio release.

"Layla", by Eric Clapton.
It was a completely different song on the unplugged show, better in my opinion. In fact, since that came out in the early 90s, I haven't heard the original song on the radio (only from my CD collection). I wonder how many people believe that the unplugged version is the only version?

Another one is the song "El Duelo" by the group La Ley which the unplugged version is way better than the original.
