Is emo THAT bad?
I like the music and everyone I know just makes fun of me for it. Say I'm just wannabe punk, etc. Is it really that horrible?
Side: If you are a fan of it as well, please share your favorite bands. I'm always on the look out for some good stuff.

I haven't yet heard any emo bands that were very good.
I don't hate it, I just haven't found any bands in the genre that I like. And I imagine there are some that I would probably enjoy listening to.
But I have to say ... a lot of the bands I've heard are sooo dang whiney.

First and foremost--I loathe the term "emo"--What the hell does it even mean? It seems to be some label people throw around to describe music that they don't like--or probably--don't get. If you want to say that "emo" alludes to "emotional" music, then that's just silly. I think all music is emotional--Heck, that's probably why it affects me so much. Music is my oxygen. It helps me to breathe.
If you want to say that "emo" music consists of whining, then I'd have to argue that the following bands/artists fall into the so-called category: The Cure, The Smiths, and on and on. You get the point.
I'm not a fan of labels. I don't even know how to classify music. Here's the bottom line: If I listen to it and like it, then that's all there is to it. I don't have to slap on a tag to know whether or not I enjoy something. And I'm never going to not give something a chance because of something so trivial.
Bah. This is something that drives me crazy. Now I'm just waiting for someone to castrate me.

Just, I know what you mean, when I first started listening to it (92-95-ish) emo was a fine term for it as most of the music around was louder and metaler. While what was considdered emo, was more melodic and yeah, emotionally driven. I only use the term now as it has been labeled that. But all the music is pretty much convergins into the SSDD. Oh well. Knew I wouldn't be accepted on any board with my emo tastes. ^^

The good news is that now you'll be able to identify with emo bands even more.
Getting back on topic, I generally don't like most emo bands. That doesn't mean I don't accept you, though. Crappy taste and all, you are welcome here!

I like Weezer. Are they emo?
Any other band I have ever heard classified as emo I have hated.

like any genre of music, it gets really old and worn out really fast. a couple bands get popular and every wanna-be band in the country buy a tight t-shirt and write whiny lyrics and its overblown. those same bands would be hair bands if that came back. there lies the problem with music, very little integrity. its all about the flavor of the month and the best bands are the ones that trancend the shell and you dont feel a need to label them, you just know theyre a great band/artist.

Whether or not I like Emo or not shouldnt really have any bearing on if you like or not...I happen to loathe the music, but if you like it, then that's great. Far be it from me to tell you what you should and shouldnt listen to.

Everything that i like is good, at least to me. That's all that really matters.
So no, emo isn't that bad.

Yeah, none of you had a chance to sway me away from the music if I like it (some of it I do, some of it I don't). Just wondered who - if anyone - was on my side of the matter. Most of the people I've come across aren't.

Well, the term "emo" has been thrown around as a genre tag for much longer than Weezer have been around. One of the first bands to ever be called it was Embrace, one of Ian McKaye's post-Minor Threat and pre-Fugazi groups. Guy Picciotto's (also a future Fugazi member... see a pattern?) band Rites of Spring was also called "emo" by some. The mid-80's D.C scene is a far cry from say, Taking Back Sunday or Dashboard Confessional. "Emo" was just a term someone thew out there to try and put a name on a new variation of the punk and hardcore scene. Until very recently, no band had ever particularly liked being called an emo band.
So, after 20 years, I think it's safe to say the term isn't going away. While the definition is still kind of vague, there's no point in really dodging it as a "genre" these days. However, it's not quite as new as a lot of people seem to think so. In my opinion, thinking that the "emo" scene consists only of bands like Taking Back Sunday, A Simple Plan, etc. is almost as outlandish as thinking that punk was invented in 1998 when Blink 182's "Dude Ranch" album came out. With music, there's ALWAYS more than meets the eye, especially if said eye is tuned to MTV.

Good Emo:
The Starting Line: Fresh sound, whiney yet a more polished sound then other bands. Saw them live, and they put on a pretty good show.
Say Anything: Very creative hooks, enjoy their new album alot
The Cure: The original Emo!
The Getup Kids: Their newer album the guilt show is okay, but their older stuff is better.
BAD EMO (there is so much...I used to like it all, but now I see the shit for shit)
1. Good Charlotte....Man I hate this band.
2. YellowCard...they are boring.
3. New Found Glory (especially their newer album...I didn't like it at all).
