I agree all that you call good is listenable. And of that which you list as bad emo, I dont even considder emo. Well, maybe yellowcard, but I'd have to be bribed.

I always considered mineral and appleseed cast to be emo. I thought of bands like straylight run, blink 182, get up kids, hey mercedes to be pop-punk. And bands like american football and owen to be indie.

Emo's not bad, the name just sucks. And all those bands that they labelled emo for the last 2 years, its just pop music.

Sidenote: The Cure is Emo? WTF? Sounds like you kiddees are rewriting history again.

Also, Rites of Spring is the definitive emo album.

I'm not exactly sure what emo is.

I hate bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Good Charlotte, and Say Anything. However, I've also heard Okkervil River, Bright Eyes, Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, and The Format called "emo" and those are some of my favorite acts right now.

emo isn't bad at all. im more of a metal head but i do listen to some emo. plus, most emo girls are yummy.

I think that Sunny Day Real Estate are considered emo. They're really good.

Back in my day, "emo" was bands like Samiam, Jawbreaker, Archers Of Loaf, and Rites Of Spring.

Well, since the thread's been resurrected, i'll have my say on the emo debate:

Personally, I don't mind some of the bands labeled with the "emo" tag, since a lot of them grew up listening to The Cure and The Smiths, two of my favorite bands and a clear influence on these kids.

The main problem with the genre and why it gets such a bad rap (and sorry, deservedly so) is that most of these groups just take the depressing/lonely aspect of their influences but don't bring with it the literary and philosophical qualities. Granted, not all music has to be deep or literary to be good, but what was cool about The Smiths is that Morrissey was so much more than being sad and lonely. The man had (and still has) a wonderful sense of humor and irony solely lacking on these bands. Also, a lot of these groups write lyrics dealing mostly with being sad over a girl, as if this was the most terrible thing in the world. The problem is not so much the subject matter but the way they express it. Stop being such wussies about it! Of course, from a marketing standpoint, this attitude sells huge.

The 2nd problem I think has to do with the whole sound and visual aesthetic of these bands. As the images Hiro posted make quite clear, the look of these kids is so ripe for parody it nearly resembles the hair metal backlash of the early 90s. Honestly, these kids look "oh so precious" with their wonderfully kept hair and black clothing. Never in my life would I have thought dressing in black could look so non-threatening. On the music side of the equation, the sound of these bands is just pop/rock disguised as something else due to the fashion and the looks. It's music perfectly suited for 12 year old girls. Somehow unfortunately I don't think it will have any lasting effect in say, 15 years, because its concerns don't trascend the puerile nature of the lyrics. I agree the label is a misnomer, all music is emotional indeed, but for better or worse, I think if you're going to call something "emo", it should better deliver on the huge implication of the word.

That being said, I do like me some Sunny Day Real Estate and Pinkerton-era Weezer. Thank God they went sorta Judas Priest after that. There's only so much whining one can take from a suburban kid with self-esteem issues in his life.

I don't know anyone who would consider BSS an emo band.

I just can't take any of these bands that sing like Blink 182 seriously. About the only one I can stomach is My Chemical Romance because they seem to have some creativity about them. Most of the singers sound like little brats. The music has no staying power.

Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco, Okkervil River, Arcade Fire, BSS, and The Format...definitely not emo bands.

FOB and PATD are two of my favorite bands at the moment. In fact, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out is a CD I can put on at any point and never get sick of it. Not sure why really, it just doesn't get old.

Also, from a few posts above, I don't think Good Charlotte should be lumped in with the other bands mentioned. The other ones mentioned at least have talent. Good Charlotte are about as punk as my fucking mom.
