I understand the "A Ghost is Born" disappointment even though listening to the first two tracks was enough for me to go and buy the CD and ultimately become a huge Wilco fan. AGiB felt a little uneven when compared to their earlier work. Still, it was some of the best music that I have been introduced to in years.

Banco de Gaia - You Are Here is these only thing I can think of that would fit this. I thought it was pretty good ambient/trance/world/whatever.

I heard their "Oil For Food" album was a ripoff of epic proportions.

I would have to say the Nirvana boxset. So many incomplete songs, way too many solo acoustic numbers, just disappointing for me. It could have been alot better.

I've been really pleased with all the new albums I've bought this year.

Some highlights:
-Lamb of God "Ashes of the Wake"
-Shadows Fall "War Within"
-Slipknot "V3"
-Killswitch Engaged "End of Heartache"
-Machine Head "Through the ashes of the Empire"
-Atomship "Crash of '45"
-OTEP "House of Secrets"

Many others, but this has been a good year for metal. I know metal isn't too popular on these boards but I think Lamb of God's is metal album of the year.

Biggest shock of the year: Darrell's shooting
Funniest moment of the year: Ashlee Simpson's lipsync ofn SNL
Stupidiest moment of the year: Janet boob thing at the SuperBowl
Genre in dire need of a reinvention: Rap
Genre in dire need to go away: girl/actor pop stars
Biggest disappointment of the year: no new System of a Down album

I can't see how this album could be a letdown to anyone who's really listened to it. The band has managed to grow in the scope of it's songwriting, created an album that has a "rock opera" style running narrative and kept it's punk rock edge through much of the album. Unless you're expecting Dookie II, American Idiot exceeds all expectations for Green Day. I consider it their Who's Next.

[QUOTE=mike1978]I thought the new Modest Mouse was terrible - it's far too glossy/overproduced, and I found more than half of the tracks to be borderline unintelligible garbage.QUOTE]

Hmph. Isaac is writing like he's always written.

I can't see how you don't understand that people can have different opinions than yours. Maybe I don't like the whole "rock opera" approach. What does Dookie have to do with anything. That album was released 10 years ago. What were there four albums released between Dookie and American Idiot? Why would anyone expect a Dookie II?
BTW, I didn't realize you were the voice for all Green Day fans. Maybe the album exceeded all your expectations, but it's nothing spectacular to me. Is that alright with you?

Taking Back Sunday: I was already expecting the worst with the lineup change, but this album still managed to disappoint.
Elliott Smith: Listened to it a few times through and didn't really stick with me.
My Chemical Romance: Debut album showed promise, this one destroyed said promise.
Incubus: Thought the first single was pretty good, but I don't think I ever listened to the whole thing in one sitting.
The Hives: Shit sandwich.
Green Day: A different kind of disappointment, as it simply didn't live up to the hype. I did really like this album though.

Overall, this was just a disappointing year in music, IMO.

Boy, in all the stuff listed, you'd think I should feel like an outsider mentioning Elton John's "Peachtree Road". Sorry, I don't have anything alternative or otherwise underground. "Peachtree Road" was just a very bland follow-up to the incredible "Songs From The West Coast". It seems like Elton just put his song writing on auto-pilot and coasted through the album. But following the disappointing "Dream Ticket" set, I guess it shouldn't have been a surprise. It was a "bigger" year for Elton, but no effort was put forth in it. Maybe he's too busy in Vegas.

It took me a while but now I really love the new Donnas CD. It's definitely a more mature sound, but Allison still has some cool guitar solos and they kick rock and roll ass live! They are really cool gals....met them last time they were in Nashville.

Biggest disappointment : Gwen Stefani's solo CD. Horrible. It sounds like TLC and other "R&B" female vocal groups with a little 1980s synth mixed in. At least I got $7.00 when I traded it in.

Agree 100%. There are cool bands out there like The Muffs who put out great music on small indie labels with hardly any exposure....then you have idiots like Ashlee Simpson and Lindsey Lohan who have NO talent and have major label record deals handed to them.

Funny, I consider American Idiot to be one of the best albums ever. Oh well, just my opinion.

My biggest disappointment was that hte new NIN record was pushed off till 2005.

Someone on netphoria.org compared it to Smashing Pumpkins Mashed Potatoes (unreleased, but leaked by Billy Corgan 5 disc set) saying it's Nirvana's version. Of course, Mashed Potates was great, whereas this was lackluster. It's a great comarison between the 2 bands.
