I really got into BR5-49 when I saw them open for the Brian Setzer Orchestra about five years ago.

That was an awesome tour. Were you at the MSG show?

There have been many actually. I see a lot of bands. One that comes to mind recently is The Donnas. I thought that they were more or less of a gimmick band until I saw them play a couple of years ago. They kicked major ass live. I was so impressed that I went out and bought all of their discs. I'm a huge fan now.

Saw Slayer open for W.A.S.P., and that show was one like all of you have described, where I was pleasantly surprised at how good the opener was, and got "into" them.
Another time was at my first concert; Cheap Trick opened for KISS at the Pontiac Silverdome, just outside Detroit. KISS had several tech problems, and took the stage a little late, and hence, CT was allowed to play a longer set...they played Beatles, Stones, and Kinks tunes. I was an instant fan, and was for many many years. I still kinda like 'em.

And they are badass! Some insane guitar and keyboard solos. Most of the live show's I've seen of theirs have been really short. They're releasing a dvd soon, too.

>>Blue October - They play this area live all the time and the first >>time I saw them, I was hooked. It makes the cd's sound even >>better than they are (and they're great, don't get me wrong) >>because you can always picture the live shows.

Holy crap! Finally someone else who has heard of and likes Blue October. I saw them play on the side stage before the DMB show in Atlanta and I was hooked. They are a little heavy for me and they do not look like a group I would like, but I stopped and gave them a listen because I saw one of them holding a violin. I was blown away. I bought both of their CDs and they are still in my CD player today and that was back in July.

I can't wait to see them again.

James was a big one for me. I saw them at the 9:30 Club two days after getting "Whiplash" in 1997. Incredible.

My brother lived in SD a while ago. Him and his then girlfriend went to the wrong bar to see a band play. They thought this band was the opening act, but they were the headliners. After hearing a few songs, my brother called me on his cell and had me listen cause he knew i'd like it (they're not his type of music).

The band was Blink 182 and this was even before Dude Ranch came out.

I still like them to this day, all over a cell phone call.

Going through this list I realized that there are more "openers" that I still listen to now than I thought

Saw Sevendust open for Limp Bizkit (back when they were actually still somewhat of a rock/rap-metal band ). Saw them that concert in Atlanta (Sevendust's home town) so there was some great energy there. Loved Sevendust ever since.

Sugar Ray played in a concert with a few other bands. Didn't really think too much of them when I heard them on the radio, but they were fantastic in concert. I had to pick up Lemonade and Brownies then and found they had such a multitude of diverse styles on it.

Saw The Mighty Mighty Bosstones in college, a friend had tried to play one of their albums for me, but I didn't think too much of them, but once I saw/heard them in concert, I've been sold every since Brilliant stuff that I can listen to over and over...

Went and saw The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Flogging Molly happened to be their opening band. So much energy on stage and great beats. I guess this was more of a "had I heard them first I probably would've loved them" than getting into them after seeing them at a concert, but my enjoyment of them is definitely heightened after seeing them play in concert

Awesome thread BTW
