Groups/artists you simply cannot stand, that everyone else seems to love...

There was a thread similar to this not too long ago, but the way it was worded was "artists you don't like who you SHOULD like". Since everyone has different opinions and tastes, I don't believe in things we "should" like. That suggests to me that we should allow Corporate America to dictate what we need to buy and listen to (if you want to overthink it, I guess ;)).

So in response to that previous thread, and to word it slightly differently, I was just curious as to what past or recent music artists/groups everyone simply cannot stand, no matter how hard you may have tried, or maybe you've just never liked their sound to even give them a chance. Groups who, when they come on the radio, you can't turn to another station fast enough, and it almost spoils your day for having been forced to listen to even one note of any of their crappy music. Groups that have been catapulted to superstar status for reasons you cannot fathom in your wildest imagination. Groups that you don't necessarily hate, but maybe when considering why people like them, you just don't get it.

Keep in mind that these are everyone's opinions, so we don't need to start heated debates or put people down for disliking someone you may love. Remember what Rob said in High Fidelity: "How can it be bullshit to state a preference?"

A few of mine are:

Lenny Kravitz
Boston (every song sounds exactly the same)
Elton John (does anyone understand what the hell he's saying?!?)
AC/DC (proof that gargling with razor blades can further your career)
Bob Seger
Lynyrd Skynyrd (mostly has to do with the area I grew up in...too long to explain)
UB40
Aerosmith
Rolling Stones (probably the big one that I just plain don't get)
Outkast ("Hey Yah" has got to be the most annoying song ever recorded)

fashionvictim86 10-17-04 01:57 PM

Metallica
Lynyrd Skynard
Nickelcrap
Hoobastank
Linkin' Park
The Doors
Meatloaf

There's a ton more I can't stand too.

fumanstan 10-17-04 02:11 PM

Prince

George T 10-17-04 03:08 PM

Bruce Springsteen

Toad 10-17-04 04:03 PM

I don't hate things because they're popular, but I do detest people who like only things that are popular. Make sense? Good.

Examples:
Widespread Panic
Phish
Maroon 5 (these guys are awful and that's all there is to it)
Anyone on TRL
Snoop Froggy Frogg

P.S. If you think "Hey Ya" is the most annoying song every recorded, I urge you to listen to old country music and also more rap. Or just see Maroon 5 above... ;)

Dude, I've always said that the word "crap" was divided into Country and Rap, and since that day they represent the two evil ends of the awful-music spectrum.

Celtic Bob 10-17-04 04:37 PM

The Doors
There is not a single song of theirs that I can listen to.

Tragically Hip is another band I cannot stand but are extremely popular.

All these Nickleback/Creed types and the pop/punk stuff like Good Charlotte, Sum 41......

Jason 10-17-04 04:57 PM

Death Cab for Cutie
Modest Mouse
TOOL
Sigur Ros
The Postal Service
Drive By Truckers

I've read endless things about how great these bands supposedly are, and I've sampled tracks from every one of them, and I think they blow.

Van Halen is the other big one that comes to mind. Besides "Right Now", which I mainly only liked for the video, I can't think of a single VH song that is good.

gmal2003 10-17-04 07:12 PM

Opeth
Sigur Ros
Phish

Same reasons as Jason.

Hollowgen 10-17-04 09:17 PM

SPiRAL 10-17-04 09:39 PM

Puffy-and all of Bad Boy
Lil Jon- pretty much all " crunk " artists
Sean Paul
Wyclef
Fabolous
Usher

I miss good Hip Hop.....

From the mid-80's to 1991.

Finch03 10-18-04 12:08 AM

Outkast
Coldplay
Good Charlotte
Portishead
Beatles
Rolling Stones
Bob Marley
mars volta
the strokes

I could list tons more

JP5683 10-18-04 12:10 AM

Celine Dion.

Smidget 10-18-04 11:57 AM

Radiohead
Pink Floyd

I don't get it. At all. I guess it's just not for me, but I like weird sounding bands a lot, just... something about both of those bands.

fryinpan1 10-18-04 12:17 PM

I cannot stand listening to Dave Matthews Band, but all of my friends love him.

tanman 10-18-04 12:17 PM

dave mathews

I can't stand them.

wendersfan 10-18-04 12:42 PM

The Doors
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd

MJKTool 10-18-04 12:57 PM

Lauryn Hill
Dave Matthews Band

Flashback 10-18-04 01:16 PM

Bands I never liked,
The Doors
Radiohead
Tool
White Stripes (are they still popular?)
Dave Matthews Band
The Strokes

Some that I have not like for a long time but did way back when (and are still popular)...

Metallica
REM
U2
Prince

Hiro11 10-18-04 01:21 PM

Coldplay- sounds like watered down Echo and the Bunnymen with a less interesting voice to me. It's also twenty years behind the times.

Dr, Dre: the guy can't rap for shit and hasn't made a good album outside of his debut (only half of which is solid anyway).

candyrocket786 10-18-04 01:25 PM

Anything w/ RKelly (I still don't get it :hscratch: )
Anything w/ Puffy
Jlo
Briteny
Good Charlotte
Anything w/ Fred Durst
Avril
Hillary Duff
Lindsay Lohan
Jessica Simpson
Linkin Park
Evanescence (I use to like them)
Eminem
Nelly
Slipknot
Metallica
Dave Matthews
Incubus
Hoobastank
John Mayer
Lil' Romeo
Fat Joe
Usher!!!!

Christ....there's shitload I need to list. This is good for now.

B.A. 10-18-04 01:32 PM

I loathe the Dave Matthews Band.

This is who I thought of when I read the thread title. Not because I agree (personally, they are one of my favorite bands), but because their music invokes such a response, be it positive or negative.

I don't really have an answer. I don't really listen to the radio anymore. I guess I would have to go with U2 or Pink Floyd. I just can't stand music without guitars ;)

Nabalab 10-18-04 01:38 PM

Dave Matthews Band - he's a camp counselor with a guitar.

And also most of the groups that performed at MTV VMA's this past year.

Other groups that I don't hate, but I think they are very very over-rated - Pink Floyd, Phish, Coldplay, Incubus.

Sounds to me like you just can't stand music with guitars drenched in a stultifying number of effects.

He was referencing a post in another thread.

Mondo Kane 10-18-04 09:51 PM

Queensryche
It's not that I can't stand them, I'm just amazed at how loyal methalheads are to them..Especially after "Silent Lucidity".

jonjj7 10-18-04 09:53 PM

I am going to have to put in another vote for the Dave Matthews Band....especially that Blood in the Water song....ughhh

DRG 10-18-04 10:14 PM

I have to second the following:

Dave Mathews Band
Radiohead (except "Creep")

and especially
Phish - I seriously hate "jam sessions" and crap where people just play out a song for a half hour... probably why I love 2 minute punk songs.

moonmadness 10-19-04 01:01 AM

Tool. And I'm not sure why some consider them "progressive". I always thought they sounded like nu-metal with an above average drummer.

If you still dont 'get it' then you just don't get Rock 'n Roll, plain and simple.

I always dread threads like these because people always come along thinking their opinion is more "right" then others and leave snide remarks like these.

In principle I agree with you completely, but then I start to wonder how someone can like rock and roll and not love Let it Bleed or Exile in Main Street.

Canis Firebrand 10-19-04 09:29 AM

I have to go with some that are mentioned.

Dave Matthews Band
Hootie and the Blowfish(though were they ever really popular with a majority?)
Phish
Grateful Dead
Rolling Stones

palebluedot 10-19-04 09:48 AM

Dave Matthews Band for me too. As individual musicians they are great...especially the drummer...but as a band they suck my big fat cock.

wendersfan 10-19-04 09:53 AM

Apparently no one really likes Dave Matthews, and his record and concert sales are all a big illusion. ;)
