picked mine up for $27.98 at target and it was clearly labeled as such on the shelf. they had about 8 copies at my location. can't wait to give it a spin!

scottp120 11-23-04 10:28 AM

I got to Target (Glen Burnie on Crain Hwy) at 10 AM and got the very last copy.

Hollowgen 11-23-04 12:25 PM

awesome, thanks!

auto 11-23-04 12:38 PM

Anyone know if they are releasing a single from the box set?

Sappy, Old Age or Do,Re,Mi would do just fine.

kms_md 11-23-04 01:09 PM

i also picked the last one up (at target). ticketed price is 39.99 (deep discount cd and amazon are both > 50.00 ).

Why?

If all you wanted was a compilation of the B sides you already have, that's easy enough to make on your own. Hell, I think I've heard about 95% of the tracks on this set and I'm still getting it.

TripWire 11-23-04 01:42 PM

Deepdiscountcd is still only 40.98.

juanmgonzalez 11-23-04 02:50 PM

Torrance, CA Target had 3 left this morning - I picked one up already.

Best Buy Hawthorne,CA had a bunch of them at their price.

nodeerforamonth 11-23-04 03:02 PM

The normal sticker price at Target had it for $33.99. Sale price is $27.98.

Love it. On disk 2 right now. I had much of it, but certainly not all. Nice to have what I already have in way better quality.

My only complaint/problem with the set is that the disks are too embedded into the case. One of mine already has a slight crack in the middle of it from trying to pull it out of the hub.

I would suggest price-matching with a Target ad at Best Buy that way you not only get the price of $28 but you also get a $5 giftcard that is in the boxset.

Also...the packaging does suck. Don't they test this out before they make it? i almost broke my first disc trying to get it out. Once they are out, mine discs will never go back in the boxset. Be very careful!

Hollowgen 11-23-04 05:25 PM

i also went to target to check it out, and got the last one on the shelf. target's really kicking ass lately on their prices for the stuff that they actually carry!

The normal sticker on mine was $39.99. Either way, great deal.

I'm not sure how much more casual fans of Nirvana will enjoy the box, but I absolutely love it. Although I already have most of the b-sides, I'm thrilled with all of the demos, live pieces and alternate takes - the stuff that complements what I already own, official or not.

Big thumbs up.

shaggy 11-24-04 05:16 AM

I'm a Nirvana collector, and have over 50 bootleg CDs and countless tapes. There is a lot here I hadn't heard or has been cleaned up. The box is amazing but only makes me hungry for more. The complete Halloween show on DVD would be a good start.

nodeerforamonth 11-24-04 11:38 AM

Saw half the DVD last night.

MAJOR COMPLAINT: Many of the songs are edited! I have no idea why, as if they're going to show the band, bare bones and all in situations like they show, why are they editing out a guitar solo or other part of the song?!?!

But, it is nice to see them rehearsing back in '88. Man, they could've been ANY band playing in someone's house. There's a couple of kids sitting down, drinking Rainier, flipping through magazines, and freakin' NIRVANA is playing 2 feet away from them!!! Little did anyone know... I certainly didn't. I passed up the chance to see them many times until '90 when I finally saw them in a club. Then I was hooked. They could've broken up the next day and I still would've said that that was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Yeah noticed that...if I remember correctly, that only happens with the 88 rehersal section. It's probably a limitation of the source material - meaning the guy filming the session on his trusty camcorder simply hit stop for a few seconds, had to change a tape, had to plug in the battery - whatever...

My favorite part is the last song at the rehersal, Mr. Moustache, when the dude with a mustache is doing a great "i've had a few beers and i'm going to groove" dance.

That's what I thought, but it also happened at the Rhino Records show too. Thought it too coincidental. The editing was pretty clever. You really had to be listening and know the song to notice.

Maybe it was a blip in the tape (it is 16 years old!) so they decided to edit out the abnormality.

Yeah that was pretty funny!

so, is the big booklet seperate, or is it kind of glued in there, like the picture looks.

Separate. There is a pocket inside the box set that holds it and you can pull it out and read it.

gp98 11-30-04 01:38 PM

I would like for iTunes to carry this because I just want the acoustic songs but I doubt they will since it's a box set.

Cornelius1047 12-01-04 05:35 PM

What is the difference between the version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" on Disc Two (Track 20) and the version on Nevermind. One is mixed by Butch Vig and the other was mixed by Andy Wallace, right? They sound very similar though. Actually, the solo feedback might be new, but I haven't listened to the song in so long. I guess what threw me off is how it isn't listed as a previously unreleased recording. Technically, it might not be, but it's a new version. Or, mix anyway. Hmm. Okay, listening to Nevermind just now, the feedback is there, just not as prominent. Or maybe I'm just crazy. It does sound louder though. Obviously it would. Does it sound different to anyone else? If it's the same song, seems kinda pointless, even if it's their biggest hit.

its proabably louder on the box set because its been remastered (note to geffen, note to geffen, remaster nevermind soon, it NEEDS it)

louder != proper mixing

Nevermind was released 13 years ago well after the cd standard came out. Did it ever occur to you that it was supposed to have a "raw" sound? Kurt was a BIG fan of Sonic Youth and similar bands and the production sound that those types of bands used.

Nevermind is anything but raw. FWIW, Cobain's dislike of the album's production for that reason is documented.

It's ridiculous how flat Nevermind sounds, especially relative to In Utero.

Yes. The version on the box is an acoustic solo version.
