Beatles - HELP and A HARD DAY'S NIGHT CD's --- What's the deal???
I've been scouring eBay and notice that the Help CD has several versions of it. The MONO version seems to be expensive, but there is also a STEREO version that is going for around 30 bucks. What is the difference between STEREO versions and how do you identify them? BTW, I'm not talking about the movie soundtrack. I see the diff there.
Also AHDN seems to have similar predicament. Any info would be appreciated or a link to find the info on the web. I've been googling but I have to wade through so much stuff it's hard to find the info in a concise form.
Also, does this occur on any other of their discs.
Thanks.

Because stereo technology was so primitive at the time, albums in the 60s were released in both mono and stereo quite frequently. I know all the early beatles albums were released that way In some cases the actual performances are different (a glaring example is Paul's vocal in "If I Fell", in others it's just the mix. Many people, myself included, prefer the mono versions. People just didn't have a handle on how to mix in stereo very well back then, and the mono mixes just sound, well, better.

AFAIK the first four beatles albums were released in mono on CD, the rest appeared in stereo - but mono versions were made of all of the albums originally, except for the final album "let it be".
the mono mixes for the rest of the CDs aren't officially available.
this might help...

Right. The expensive discs you're seeing on eBay are probably all bootlegs. There are hundreds of different ones. Hopefully this link is ok to post, as it's not about obtaining the discs, just showing the variations: http://www.bootlegzone.com/files.php?section=1&sort=1
I remember when the cds first came out, my dad was kind of disappointed that the first four albums (including A Hard Day's Night) were only available in mono because he was used to his stereo vinyl albums which sometimes contained different takes, mixes, & track orders.
I think stereo Help! & mono AHDN are the only officially released cds so far.
