Forgot about these:

Whiskeytown - Don't Be Sad

Barenaked Ladies - Some Fantastic (yeah...believe it or not. the chorus/refrain is pretty haunting when you're going through a breakup with a chick you like. long story...i digress. carry on.)

Matthew Sweet - I've Been Waiting

Buddy Holly - Everyday

Weezer - Island in the Sun (nice segue there, huh?)

Jack Johnson - Cupid

(more to come when i think of 'em)

I am more partial to Brave, myself.

I can take or leave most of Fish's work. Sometimes his sound is great, others he just sounds Phil Collins-lite.
I enjoyed Raingods With Zippos but haven't really liked the early Fish solo stuff that I've heard so far. I do love his work with Marillion but generally find myself listening to Hogarth era material more often (AOS, This Strange Engine, Marillion.com, Anoraknophobia). Still haven't managed to figure out how I feel about Marbles though and I preordered it so I've had it since it came out.

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton is a heartbreaking but beautiful song he wrote about the death of his young son. It really chokes me up when I hear it. Another song that evokes the same feeling for me is Time by The Alan Parsons Project.

To me, the man with a lock on this category is Brian Wilson -- at his peak, his ability to turn out heartrending songs was uncanny. See: "God Only Knows", "Caroline No", "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)", "Wonderful", etcetera.

I agree. I mentioned this before (not sure if it was this thread), but we had a project in high school where we were given a poem and we had to interpret it in a presentation to the class. The teacher also let us pick a song that went with the theme of the poem. I chose this song and when I pushed play everything went quiet and the song played. I love that he chose to play it at his Unplugged gig and it sounds so beautiful with just Clapton singing and playing the guitar. There was not a dry eye in the class (be it just people tearing up or people crying rivers).

Of course there were only three guys in the class (including me), as it was an Advanced Placement English class, but still...(if anyone just sits down and listens to the song it brings so much emotion).
