Review of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE show halloween night

AMAZING FREAKIN SHOW!

I always thought Queens would be better to see in a small venue, but they were great at the Greek.

THe Greek theater in LA is a rather small outside venue, like a mini hollywood bowl with great sound.

Got up there about an hour before the show started with a friend of mine. Waited in line for about 10 minutes, then KROQ gave us free bags of BUTTERFINGERS and we were allowed in. It was raining and freezing and pretty damn misserable there. (ALthough far better than the brown skys southern california has seen lately)

Masters of Reality came on and the place was barely a quarter full, and most were just hanging out under some coverings. I had never heard of MOR but I think i'm a new fan. THey were great, and I really want to check out more of their stuff.

They played for about 35 minutes I believe, then after a 15 minute or so intermission Tomahawk came on. Didn't like them much at all, but I think they fit the show and the night quite well. They deffinitly should have been louder, although thats not their fault. The band just sounds "evil". I described it to my friend as Satan himself getting boinked in the rear. The dude from Faith No More has some serious issues I wonder if he was even speaking English. Wouldn't be supprised if the lyrics to their songs were "zaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa paaaaaaaaaaaa ma tajkl jkl fjffffffffffiiiiiiiiiiiiuuk aaaaaaaaaasppppppz zzzzzzzztttaaaaaaaaa"

The show was filling up a little bit more, but still very empty. I think only about 20 people in the pit no more even. (LA people hate rain by the way)

Then Jeb the fish from KROQ comes out and yaps about how great it is to see the cramps on halloween.

The Cramps came on and the show truely began. What a blast. High energy, wierd fun. I had heard of them before and thought they would be just more of a novelty act, but I think they would be great to see any time. Just watching the lead singer jump in the pit and scream at people and look up the guitarist's skirt was enjoyable. Halfway through their set it began to pour. Lots of people left, but everyone else just got up and started dancing. A lot of fun.

Queens of the Stone Age were amazing. I have SONGS FOR THE DEAF and have listened to other songs on other albums, and while I like them (enough to buy tickets for their show) I didn't LOVE them. Good, not great. But they blew me away. They were so spectacular live it was amazing. Easily one of the best shows I have ever seen. We left during the encore and beat the traffic which gets horrible exiting the greek. we were soaked to the bone, even my underwear was dripping. oh well.Too bad we had to miss them dressed as the village people playing GO WITH THE FLOW and KNOW ONE KNOWS.

There were some clever costumes there (wondered how security checked the robot guy) but panchos seemed to be the most common thing worn there. The Greek was lightly decorated and most of the staff were made up a little.

It was probably the best halloween I have ever experienced. An absolute blast, despite my possible chances of catching phenomnia.

Oh yea, I was in Bunny ears, bunny tail and bunny bow tie in case you were there.

Sounds like you had a great time! I wish I had seen those two bands when they were in England.

Chris Goss of MoR produces and sometimes plays with QotSA. He has had some interesting people play with his long-term band including, at one stage, Ginger Baker (ex-Cream).

Sounds like a great show!

I agree with you about seeing QOTSA live in a smaller venue. I've seen them live on this tour and for the last album in a 1800 person indoor venue and was blown away. Then I saw them this summer at Lolla at an 18000 person outdoor amphitheater and the show wasn't close to being half as good.

Saw them oct. 7th at Vancouver's Orpheum Theatre; a venue that holds 3000 and is usually reserved for operas and more 'classical' acts... It's incredibly elegant with ornate decorations and roman design.

It was somewhat odd seeing the Distillers (opening band) play in such a venue with their extremely violent and blasphemous backdrop and sloppy sound...

But when QOTSA took the stage, it was a completely different experience. The venue was pretty small (not completely intimate, but I was 6th row and the theatre only held 3000 so it was fairly close) and the band was perfect, as always. So much emotion, so much skill, you could tell they were having fun and wanted us to enjoy ourselves too...

This was my first 'rock' concert, I guess you could say (actually, QOTSA is what got me listening to rock again) so I don't have much to compare it to. I know, though, that these guys are amazing live (in relation to live acts I've seen on TV, the Distillers , and their album).

Vancouver got arguably one of the best sets on this tour, with a fairly broad coverage from the s/t, rated r, and songs for the deaf. I was so happy to hear them play 'Another Love Song', something they don't perform all that much but is one of my favourites. Other highlights were 'If Only', 'Leg of Lamb', 'How to Handle a Rope', and 'You Can't Quit Me Baby', as well as the obvious SFTD stuff. Only real dissapointment was that they didn't do Better Living through Chemistry, but you can't have everything, eh?

Sounds like you had a good time, which is awesome. Don't worry about missing 'Go With the Flow' live; it's one of the few that IMO sounds better on the album because of the keyboard, and there's no crazy solo in it anyway. Plus if you ever see them again you'll probably hear 'No One Knows', it's probably their most famous song.
