Does anyone else like NewOrder?
Cause I do. I am a 21 year old white male and have been told numerous times that I am gay because I like NewOrder! Is it so wrong to like '80's brit-pop? I think not. Anyone agree with me?

I'm not exactly a fan per se, but I do like many of their songs (and songs from Joy Division, their predecessor). And I'm not gay either, but I have to say, I wouldn't have admitted to listening to this kind of music while I was in high school. Now I'm married, 35 years old and I don't give a crap about what people think, I listen to what I want.

Damn...lol. Been into them for 20 years exactly and never once thought it was "gay" music. That's just silly. Get into them, absorb them and enjoy. One of the greatest bands that ever came down the pike.

I've been into them since they were called Joy Division. My first big concert was a New Order show... I bought a t-shirt. It had a flag with the stars and stripes, but in rainbow colors. I was 14 or 15 at the time and this was the 80s... Anyway - I wore it once and it shrunk after being washed like it was made out of wool sweater. Good thing, cuz I didn't realize how gay that shirt was until later.

You were called "gay" because you like New Order? Where on earth do you live!? First of all, those who are calling you that probably don't even know who the hell they are. New Order are an amazing band. And influental on so many bands after them. If you like them, pick up Bernard Sumner's side project band Electronic. Especially their first album. Very similar musically and production wise to the best of New Order. Peter Hook's two solo bands Revenge and Monaco are also very New Order sounding. With Hook's killer bass signature. Also, do yourself a favor and pick up the movie "24 Hour Party People". Which is a "monumentary" about the Manchester music scene (that includes New Order, the Happy Mondays, etc).
Man, it's a good thing you don't listen to Depeche Mode. You might get your ass kicked.

New Order is okay, but I much prefer Joy Division.

You kidding me, either "Temptation" or "Bizarre Love Triangle" is on every dance mix I ever made! Seriously, one of my favorite dance groups ever. Big fan of Joy Division too - "Transmission" can also be found on many a dance mix.

first off, i think new order is awesome. i only have their most recent cd, but i've heard a lot of their older stuff that i like too.
as for joy division becoming new order, can someone explain to me how this came about? i had no idea about this. i've only heard a couple songs of theirs, which i liked, but i had no idea of their becoming new order in one form or another.

somevoices, go to allmusic.com and read about the change from JD to New Order. The whole thing is well documented, but basically New Order grew out of the suicide hanging of Ian Curtis (JD's lead singer) in 1980. Joy Division became New Order and Bernard jumped over to vocals. They started using more electronics and added a female keyboardist. If you listen to the very first New Order album it almost sounds like Joy Division... but then after that they stretched their sound out and became a very different but equally great band.
And as mentioned in this thread, you can get a small dose of this story in the movie "24 Hour Party People" which came out on DVD earlier this year.

If I was RandyC by now I am sure that I would have added [Gay Pride Thread] or something similar to the title!
FWIW I have double CD which includes the huge-selling tracks "Blue Monday" and "Confusion".
More of a rock fan, I do have discs by Yello, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream among others so there must be something in this electro/techno stuff!

OOOH, I beat all of you. I liked them since they were called Warsaw. Even bought that rare hard to find vinyl of theirs.
They are ok. They began to lose me when they remade Ceremony and Blue Monday. Wow, were those pretty awful.
They were sooooo popular in college, especially Bizarre Love Triangle. I heard that song everywhere that I actually began to resent it/them. Silly, I know, but it just became plain annoying.
They do have some great songs/albums though.

I have loved New Order ever since I saw them at the Felt Forum in NYC in 83. Loudest. Concert. Ever.
And I have seen many.
And I have seen many.

I don't think a pension for moody instrumentation and a vocalist with a similar key really makes a band a Joy Division revisionist.

Bizarre Love Triangle is the ultimate dance anthem of the people within a +/- 5 yrs of my age back in the Philippines. Loved' em back in high school, love 'em still.
