Does anyone else like NewOrder?

I don't think a pension for moody instrumentation and a vocalist with a similar key really makes a band a Joy Division revisionist.

I think Interpol kinda sound like Joy Division, but they kinda sound like the Bunnymen, too. Doesn't matter anyway - Ian Curtis was one of a kind.

My point was if you like Joy Division you might like Interpol...
Apperently fallow being from the hotbed of great musical opinions state of Virginia has a pension for being a ***.

Calling a band the "second coming of Joy Division" seems to say much more than "if you like Joy Division, you might like Interpol."
Nevermind the VA comment, it doesn't have anything to do with anything.
Wendersfan, I completely agree - I've always found the E&BM comparison to be much closer.

FWIW I listen to Interpol far more often than JD (or New Order). It's an excellent album.

I bought Technique based on the artwork back when it was released with no idea who these New Order people were. I immediately loved it and enjoyed them for some time until Depeche Mode's Violator came out. It's all about the music!

Interpol. I think the JD comparison is accurate to a point... I guess saying "if you like..." is probably the best. Personally, I hear 50% Joy D and 50% The Chameleons. I mean, damn, they REALLY sound like The Chameleons at times (guitars).
I noticed that New Order released a box set called "Retro" at the end of 2002. I'm not sure it's something I would "need" since I own all the proper albums, but it would be one of the first times I'd buy something as a collectors item. Wonder if the booklet is worth it? It's only $24 on BMG.

I've considered buying the box set myself, but I understand that each disc (4 of 'em) was compiled by a friend/connection of the band and they don't always make the greatest choices. I heard an advanced promo (one disc - 10 songs maybe), and some of the tracks sounded so lo-fi that I couldn't handle it; the version of "Temptation" sounded like a horrible demo recorded through a metal pan. But if you really want to get it as a collector's item, I say, "Yay!" especially for $24. Hell, that's making me re-think it.

fallow... I'm just playing around on the Interpol deal. It's hard for a band to come out today with 100% originality. I will say this... I LOVE that crap! If there was one band I'd like to see live it would be them. Also, they sound a lot like Kitchens of Distinction as well (maybe 23%).
I'm curious what you meant about New Order's lo-fi sound on the box set. I'm going to guess that you've heard the original "Temptation" that was on their vinyl EP... before the remixed version appeared on "Substance"? I have always thought the original was WAY better and I think that's what ended up on the box. I'd buy this thing on BMG, but with 4 discs I think the shipping is PER disc and would probably be an additional $10.

Actually, I have most of New Order's singles on 12" vinyl.

Regarding "Temptation", to be honest, I'm not really sure. I'll have to look into it more, but for what it's worth, I don't own Substance or any of their 12"s. That is one New Order track I have on my computer (easy access to dance mixes, of course).

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I just bought RETRO ealier this week, and...IT'S AWESOME!!!
I am now hooked. Their songs are great, the beats are great, the members are great, everything is just great
! Regret used to be my favorite song, but I think The Perfect Kiss has now replaced it.
As for the Temptation, I can rip the song off the box for anyone who has the 12" and wants to do a comparison. Sorry for my ranting...

I would think that if you didn't like New Order, there was something wrong with you. Substance alone makes them great. That is by far one of my favorite albums of all time.

I got the New Order 316 DVD for Christmas. Always been a huge N.O. fan. However, I have to admit they aren't always the best live. But it's still a good DVD and concert. I prefer their studio work.

I like New Order's albums - but their songs don't translate too well live. Also, they're rather life-less and boring live. So I assume that their live dvds aren't too special.

I got the 511 DVD (and I think it's under $10 at DDD), and I think it's great. They may be a bit older and fatter, but this is a great sounding show, with Hook's bass up front. The JD songs they play are a bit of a mixed bag. They say in the show that they hadn't played some of those songs for 25 years, and with Digital, it sounds like it. But man, She's Lost Control kicks a$$!! Transmission and Love Will Tear us Apart sound fine. Also, I was very impressed with the new song 60 Miles an Hour---sounds great live. I thought this DVD was well worth it, and anamorphic widescreen, too.

I also love New Order, don't miss out on Technique and Brotherhood, two of the best albums ever. Retro is a great box, the fan CD is awesome start to finish.
It always amazes me how many people only know New Order for Blue Monday and BLT, and have never heard their more guitar driven songs.
