WHFS is better because they don't have No Doubt in the top 5. Seriously this has to be from the 80s on...right???

From the first list:

1. Nirvana
2. Sublime
3. Depeche Mode
4. Linkin Park
5. No Doubt
6. Rage Against the Machine
7. U2
8. Green Day
9. Beastie Boys
10. Red Hot Chili Peppers
11. Blink-182
12. System of a Down
13. The Smashing Pumpkins
14. Korn
15. Bob Marley
16. Metallica
17. The Offspring
18. The Cure
19. Incubus
20. Stone Temple Pilots

The idea of ANY of those (expect arguably U2 or Metallica) being 'bigger' than Pearl Jam in an all time list is absolutely ludicrous.

I'm not saying best, because I know my bias will put PJ at #1 on any list, but that list is just insane!

all these list are always effected by the latest bands of the last couple of years being ranked up fairly high.. but I stand with my many kroq shirts and say that the KROQ list is a bit better.

Does "Biggest Bands" mean best bands? or does it mean how popular they were/are?

gotta go with KROQ for the mere mention of "Pet Shop Boys" and "Travis" (woohoo!).

WHFS' sounds like a list MTV would compile. (I thought I had heard that MTV is a parent company of HFS)

On another HFS sidenote, it's great to hear that Dave Marsh is back on "Now Hear This", wish HFS would expand his program to two hours.

I do know for a fact the KROQ list was compiled by a listener poll. I would assume HFS did the same. But I have to disagree about at least one band being bigger than Pearl Jam, Depeche Mode. Not only have they sold over 50 million albums worldwide (and counting). Their back catalogue continues to sell very well. They also continue to sell out 20,000 plus arenas after all these years. If we're talking about "all time", I'd also put the Cure ahead of Pearl Jam. Mainly because both bands have a good 12 plus years on Pearl Jam. And have influenced so many bands. Pearl Jam not being one of them of course. But Pearl Jam and Nirvana were definitely the template for so many bands after them too.

For what it's worth, I like KROQ's list better.

Isn't U2 one of the highest grossing concert bands of all time? It seems like their place on the list is perfectly legit.

Overall, I think both lists are hurt by the recency-effect. Painfully.

Agree. It's clearly a popularity contest. There should be rules though. No way should Linkin Park be ahead of U2 on ANY list. And I like them!

Really surprised to see the ranking of Sublime (2 & 4).. Actually makes me think that the high rank of Nirvana & Sublime might be based on what could've been rather than what was.. Don't get me wrong. I really like those 2 bands a lot.... and no Led Zep?

These are "kroq" and "hfs" bands of all time, unless I'm mistaking, I don't think they have ever played zep, or any 70's artist.

KROQ plays Nirvana all the time. It's actually one of the good things about KROQ, they tend to play a lot of stuff, not just recent stuff -- but like any other radio station, they generally overplay new stuff.

They also play Bob Marley on occasion -- for KROQ, I think it may have started because KROQ used to have Reggae on Sunday afternoons.

As far as "new music" radio stations are concerned, KROQ is one of the best I've heard -- I've listened to some other "alternative" stations that broadcast on the net, and many of them sucked far more than KROQ -- KROQ at least still introduces new bands and takes chances on bands... like Thrice, Sublime, etc... both who got their radio careers started by KROQ.

Those two list's rank among some of the worst I have ever seen. Right behind VH1's all time best songs list. 2/3rds of the bands don't even belong on either list. Not to make Nirvana fans mad, but them being #1 on both, proves the credibility of those list's. Pure Crap.

I can name bands that hardly ever even got airplay in America, and still acheaved more fame worldwide, than Nirvana ever did. If they based it on what they "would have done", thats pure crap as well, because it wasn't done. Honestly, if Curt hadn't shot himself, they would have been forgeotten, just like the rest of those "I'm in denial we are a metal band, but we are" groups from Seattle. Like I said I 'm sorry, If I made any Nirvana fans mad, but the truth does hurt. They are overrated, and thier contribution to music is overblown by the suicide of thier singer/songwriter/guitar player. Don't be mad, I used to be a Nirvana fan, untill they denied what they were.

Linkin Park!! Are you kidding me?!! They have to be the worst of all the Nu-Metal bands. They are big right now in the insognificant no talent Nu-Metal world, but they will be forgotten in a few years from now. In the grand scheme of music they are a speck.

NO DOUBT - not a bad band, but doesn't yet belong on this list, if ever. GREEN DAY - ??? Don't mind em, but don't belong either. BLINK 182, S.O.T.D., and KORN - don't mind S.O.T. D. but they all fall under the speck file. BOB MARLEY - Belongs, but he only made it to this sheepish list, because kids only listen to him, because it's cool to say they do. I love em', but I liked him, also, when it wasn't cool. THE OFFSPRING, INCUBUS, WEEZER(WTF), SOCIAL DISTORTION, and OINGO BIONGO!!! - I don't know what shocks me more, that a few of these bands are even on the list, or WEEZER!!Specks also. Whoops, forgot RADIOHEAD. Wow!! I was going to go through them all, but there are way to many. It's just sad.

To make it short - STP, TOOL, 311, NIN, Alice in Chains, Limp Bizkit( You have to be kidding me!!), Staind, Bush, Bad Religion, New Order, Garbage, Pennywise, Godsmack, P.O.D, Coldplay, Cypress Hill, Jimmy Eat World, Tori Amos, Hole(come on people), Rancid, Fat Boy Slim, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Marilyn Manson , Save Ferris, The Sex Pistols(more famouse now than they were then, and only because of the the "cool to say I am a fan" factor), Disturbed, Primus(love em', but can name many more bands that were "bigger"), The Go-Go's, Everclear, Bjork, Prodigy, Cake(cool band), MxPx, Third Eye Blind, Sum 41, travis, Papa Roach, A Perfect Circle, New Found Glory, The Cranberries, Lit, Puddle of Mud, Blur, Unwritten Law, Pet Shop Boys, Hoobastank, X(kind of liked them), Adema, Everlast/House of Pain, Good Charlotte, Pixies, Bare Naked Ladies, kid Rock(Long gone), The Chemical Brothers, Jimmy Eat World, Sonic Youth(I like them, but that doesn't mean they belong, on the general terms, this list was created under), Mighty Bosstones, Filter, Soul Asylum, PJ Harvey, and a few I forgot. Do not belong on this list!!!

It states the "biggest bands of all time". Not of any certain kind of music, or time frame. I can sit here and name a band that was bigger than each band on the above mentioned paragraph. I like some of those bands, but it does not mean they belong on a list like that. The list should read "Here is what modern sheep radio fans think are the biggest bands of all time list". Then I would have no problem with it.

I'm sorry if I mentioned your fav. band, or made anyone mad, but when a "best of" list is put up, on an internet message board, there will allways be someone like me, who thinks it reeks of crap, to put it in a nice way. Please don't be mad at me, it is after all, just my opinion, and we all differ a little bit. It is obviouse that list list was made mostly of kids, who use nothing more than crapy corporate owned radio station's as thier main source of musical infuence. Such a shame, but it seems to be the truth. I just hope all the people who agree with this list, take time to go out, and discover other music, new and old, than the crap our radio spew out these days. I'm not THAT old, so don't call me old, I know your thinkin' that. I'm just old enough to know how it was, before corperate music became so damn corperate, if that makes any scence to you guys. This list has proven just how sad it has become. Kids no longer search out music, they just take what is spoon fed to them. Once again Sorry to ramble or bash, just putting in my opinion.

Thank You.

../.

It states KROQ's & HFS's biggest bands of all time. That list sums up THAT radio stations airplay (which IS a certain genre)

No, no. I meant a general spot on the list, not that one specifically. It was a response to someone that said anyone who put U2 (among other bands) above Pearl Jam was kidding themselves.

I said below that the lists both suffered from recency-effect. I thought Linkin Park would fall in that category.
