The opening song: "Just the Way I'm Feeling" off the latest Feeder album is achingly sad and poignant, since the album was the first since one of the three members of the band commited suicide last year. A very personal and powerful song that made me choke up when I first heard it.

the song that always works on me is from candlebox - its been a while since i poured some money in the jukebox in a smokey bar - but i think it's "far away."

The only other one to come close was "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" by Israel K-something from the "Finding Forrester" soundtrack. Was I the only one?

How Soon Is Now?....Actually, a lot of the Smiths's/Morrissey's stuff from around then...
In My Darkest Hour by Megadeth....
Lonely and You Didn't Need by Rollins Band.....
Little 15 by Depeche Mode...I was dating a 15 year old at the time, and thought it was 'love', and that song was exactly how I felt about her. Even now it still gives me chills and gets me morose/contemplative....But some of theirs also do it to me, in a different way: Black Celebration, and Blasphemous Rumours especially.
Old Man, by Morton Downey Jr. And the one about the prostitute, I can't recall the name of it. Actually, almost that entire album is sad [Morton Downey Jr Sings!] And no, I don't mean the fact that it exists ;0
Some of that is the songs themselves, some is the nostalgic feeling I get when I listen to them....I was much more into music back in high school/college, and those were the songs that were the soundtrack to some awesome memories...
There's certainly more, but I can only take so many of them at one time ; )

I like "Little 15" too, but "Walking in My Shoes" is my ultimate sad song. I don't know what it is about that song, but I actually have to be careful, if I'm already feeling down it will send me to the depths of dispair.

This Woman's Work - Kate Bush
One Sweet Day - Mariah Carey
Angels' Son - Sevendust
Angel's son really gets me. I was driving home from my granddad's funeral when the song came on. I completely broke down. I had to pull over to the side of the road.

Sevendust - Angels Son
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Life by the Drop
Johnny Cash - Hurt
I tear up every time I hear any of these 3.
On an interesting note. Lajon Witherspoon, the singer of Sevendust, lost his brother Reginald to gunfire last year. He vowed to get back on the road ASAP as his brother would have wished. I saw him perfom this song only 4 days after his death, it was the most emotional and intense thing that I've ever been through.
It was written for Lynn Strait of SNOT, they were amazing friends. But the songs lyrics fit whenever somebody loses someone close.
I'm actually tearin' up now, just thinking back to that night in Hampton Beach, NH.

I completely agree - Ruby's Arms makes me want to sit in the dark & drink heavily...
Also will add:
Tom Waits - A Little Rain
Williams Brothers - Can't Cry Hard Enough (this one is so personal to me, I can't listen past the first few lines anymore because it brings back painful memories)
