WoW!!!! I never check into the music forum b/c except for the Jam Bands, I really don't listen to any modern music. But I was shocked to see my FAVORITE band have it's own thread.

I've seen Moe. in concert I think 16 times. My girlfriend & her roomates got pulled up stage & sang with them back at the Further Festival I think it was in 97 which was in my life the greatest concert performance I've ever seen, Moe, the Black Crowes, every living member of the Dead all perfoming as one big band. And we got to meet them Moe. afterwards & hang w/ them a little bit.

Anyway, I play guitar & have been focusing on Jazz for the past 6-7 years & if you really know anything about music, you would know that Moe. Literally is just miles & miles ahead of every single band that is played on the radio MTV etc. Hell, they are flat out the best musicians in any band today. Their rhythems & guitar are absolutely mind boggling. I HATE how people into the Jam Band scene almost make it a requisite that Phish is the best or most talented. I HATE Phish, Trey is such a tool & everything Phish does Moe. does about a hundred times better.

That said, Wormwood is infinitely their best album in years, personally No Doy has a special place in my heart & I feel just based on Rububla(sp?) their best album to date. However, at least for me Wormwood just doesn't have any "classic" moe type song on it, do you guys feel differently? Maybe once I see them perform some Wormwood stuff live I'll change my mind, but while Wormwood id extremely competent, their isn't one song that really sticks out & grabs me.

Bust - That Filmore show looks insane... Double encore with Rebubula? Jeezus...

Sessa17 - Nice to read ya! I find myself pretty much in complete agreement with a lot of what you posted. They are the best band in the biz at this moment. No question. Guitar - I play as well, on and off for the last 16 years, but my style is more rooted in heavy rock... Point being that jazz, rock, metal or country, doesn't matter, good music is universal. On your Wormwood comments, I personally feel that it is their best album due to it's maturity - both musically and technically. You're right, there are no "old school" moe. tunes on it but if you have yet to see them perform Bullet, Kids or Kyle's Song live, then you are in for a treat... The jams in the middle of those tracks have been nothing short of devastating at the shows I have seen over the last year... Anyhoo, keep on posting! Cool story! :)

moe.rons of the world unite!

moe.'s setlists have been looking really great this tour. Used to be my biggest problem with moe. was that their setlists don't change as much as most bands. If I go to a moe. show and they don't play "Timmy Tucker" or "Moth," I'm shocked.

I'd have loved to see them play "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" or "Up on Cripple Creek" (I'm a big Band fan). I also cannot wait to hear "Bullet" live, though I have had the opportunity to see "Kids" and "Kyle's Song."

Also, I think Wormwood sounds much more like classic moe. than Dither did, maybe even moreso than Tin Cans. To me, the songs on the new disc are on par with "Moth," "Rebubula," and "Spine of a Dog." The vast majority of the stuff on their last few albums did not reach those heights (but I am still a fan of Dither and Tin Cans).

Finally, do we have to turn this into a Phish-bashing thread? Among jamband fans, it is far from accepted that Phish is the best and most talented. That is a matter of opinion and of personal taste. However, anyone who would deny the massive contribution that Phish has provided to the jamband scene as it exists today is simply wrong. I don't care if you like Phish or hate them, but I stay away from Phantasy Tour because I hate threads that degenerate into a "_________ sucks, but ___________ rules" discussion.

Agreed. I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I'm really tired of these people who think they can only like one of the jam bands. I have never seen this kind of behavior in any other music genre.

I'm not necessarily pointing fingers at you Sessa17, you may like every jam band except Phish for all I know, but you can't deny the existence of such "fans".

You should come around more often. This is one of the best forums on DVDtalk.

No, I agree, & I wasn't trying to turn this into a Phish sucks thread I didn't even think I said much about them, but someone else must have thought so. In my experience & I've probably been to over 20 festivals & literally maybe around 100 Jam oriented concerts, I've rarely come across fans that think they can only like one jam band though. I definitely don't like every jam band , I actually think most are overrated. The guys I like the most though aside from moe. are String Cheese can't get enough of them, although moe. is my favorite, STI put out my favorite pure studio albums of the bunch.

now i don't want to take this thread off topic anymore.

You must never visit Phantasy Tour then. I never realized how spiteful and ignorant most jamband fans could be til I checked out their forums. They've got 5 boards (Phish, moe., Widespread, SCI and Disco Biscuits). It seems like that at any given time, there is a thread on each of these boards about how much SCI sucks (though the Disco Biscuit and SCI fans seem to have the most intense dislike for each other). I've also learned from their boards that if I like Phish (or moe. or Widespread, etc.), I'm not supposed to like any other band that improvises. If I do, I'm not a true fan. I really hate that attitude. I wore a SCI shirt to a Widespread show once and had two people go out of their way to tell me how much SCI sucked.

I think jamband fans are so intensely loyal to one band because it takes a lot of time and effort to be a jamband fan. We travel for shows more than other music fans. We collect shows. We make an effort to learn the obscure songs. We read setlists for shows we didn't even attend. When you devote a significant portion of your life to the music of a couple bands, you're going to develop an intense loyalty to them.

Johnny Zhivago 02-11-03 04:43 PM

Very true...

And, please, feel free to take this thread off topic... It's all good and I think we're all, more or less, fans of the same bands and/or types of bands...

Of course, it'll all come back to moe. since they're the best... ;)

Yeah, No Doy will always be my favorite moe. album. I lucked out and got TCandCT a couple months before it was released through the college radio station I worked for. Fortunately for me, and unfortunately for EVERYONE ELSE, the music director decided not to put it in rotation, so she gave it to me.

I absolutely fell in love with: Nebraska, Plane Crash, and Happy Hour Hero right off the bat.

Dither was a different story. Bought it the day it was released, and didn't like it at first. I can't explain why, maybe it was because I was really getting into the live shows back then and the studio albums just aren't the same. After I learned to listen to it for what it was, it quickly grew on me. I love TGORM and the Big Country cover is amazing.

As far as Wormwood, the first several times I listened to it, my favorite was Kyle's Song ->Bend Sinister ->Kids. Currently, I'm really into Okayalright ->Rumble Strip ->Gone.

The lyrics in "Gone" are amazing.

So I'll just sing another song about
the love and loss
To get my point across
Bestowing words of wisdom on the
way
Unless you'd rather hear another
one about the rain
Or the singer's pain
And the important things that
he has to say

Not to mention, I'm just a really big fan of the songs that Al sings, usually. There are exceptions.

Actually, they're the second best, but it's all good... ;)

Also, I agree with Johnny Zhivago...it's cool to take the thread off topic. I'm just glad that a discussion about jambands has lasted as long on the forum as this one has...

I think we should keep posting in it to keep it at the top of the forum. Maybe we'll influence some people to listen. Crazier things have happened.

It will be easy to stay on topic too, what with the "Wormwood" tour currently in progress. Every time I see a set list, I can think of something to talk about.

Johnny Zhivago 02-12-03 12:13 PM

Bump ^ I agree... :) Plenty of moe. related activity to keep this thread going...

Speaking of, do any of you guys know the story behind Kyle's Song? Or, is there one?

Gdrlv 02-12-03 12:55 PM

From moeLinks:

Kyle's Song was written after a good friend of the band, Kyle (the artist for John Street) was hit by a car outside of a moe.show in Washington DC at the 9:30 Club in December of 2000. Kyle is fine, and survived with only a shoulder injury.
My favorite explanation for a moe. tune (for "lylelovit"):

"That was called 'lylelovit.' It doesn't have anything to do with him, but we couldn't call it David Bowie." - Al

After listening to Wormwood for a week, my least favorite track is probably "Not Coming Down." Still a good song though...

Johnny Zhivago 02-12-03 02:13 PM

Ah... About what I figured...

That's a good line, Al is a smartass... :)

Still Crab Eyes for me, but I have warmed up to it some... It just doesn't work well for me for whatever reason...

Anyone pick up the Al & The Transamericans CD?

Nay.

I try not to get interested in side projects. I have enough trouble keeping up with the regular bands.

Johnny Zhivago 02-12-03 03:59 PM

Listened to some of it, pretty decent but it's a more stripped down roots rock type of disc... Pretty straight forward. Haven't picked it up yet myself but I may eventually just to have a studio version of Waiting For The Punchline.

The al.one disc on the other hand is muy excellente... I highly recommend that one if you like electronic music at all...

Gdrlv 02-13-03 04:22 PM

moe.'s covering some interesting tunes this tour. Here's the last two setlists...

2/12/03 Cajun House - Scottsdale, AZ
1: It, Happy Hour Hero > Mexico, Conviction Song, Kyle > Timmy Tucker

2: Opium > 32 Things > Hi and Lo > Meat > Jack Straw > Meat

E: Seat Of My Pants, Call Me The Breeze

2/11/03 Orpheum Theater - Flagstaff, AZ

1: The Ghost of Ralph's Mom, She Sends Me, The Faker, Tambourine, Spaz Medicine > Water > Head

2: Akimbo > Low Rider Jam > Oye Como Va* > Spine Of A Dog > Yodelittle > Money > Yodelittle > Jazz Wank > Buster

E: The Weight

* First time played.

Really starting to wish I was able to get Vegas tix. Anyone think I've got a chance of trading my Particle tickets for moe. tickets in the Phish lot? Wishful thinking, I know...

Dude, you'd be crazy not to go to the show whether you end up with tickets or not. Do you have tickets to Phish?

Johnny Zhivago 02-13-03 04:50 PM

Hmmmm... Money and Jack Straw again... Was just listening to those from the 12/31 show last night...

Gdrlv - I feel your pain and wish you much luck... But, moe. have been on fire since last spring, fraid' the word is out...

I've got tickets to both nights of Phish. In fact, I just found out yesterday that I've got one extra for both nights...a friend isn't coming out that was supposed to. Got 'em for the second night through the lottery. Got 'em for the first night from a friend who works VIP services for Paris and Bally's.

I'll bet you could get a moe. for your extra Phish. That would make for a HELL of a night. Phish at 7 (?), moe. at midnight.

I think I'm going to get a hard on just thinking about it.

Yeah, as much as I love Particle, it did feel like I was settling for second best as far as the afterparties are concerned. I may try to trade a Phish for 2 moe., which sounds fair to me (given that the Phish tickets were well over twice as much as the moe. tickets).

It's going to be an amazing weekend of music out here. The afterparties I'm aware of...

moe. at House of Blues
Particle and Granola Funk Express at the Hard Rock Cafe
The Big Wu and Tea Leaf Green at the Huntridge Theater
re'Phorm at Chameleon Studios
Cubensis (Dead cover band) at the Rock
Oakhurst at the Double Down Saloon

By the way, if you guys haven't heard Particle, I strongly urge you to check 'em out. Far and away the best jamband to ever come out of L.A.

Gdrlv 02-13-03 05:31 PM

Sorry about 2 quick posts right in a row, but I just checked Particle's web site. They're doing a post-moe. party at this year's Area 51 Soundtest. Considering that show's held on acres of uninhabited desert, I'm guessing I won't get shut out of moe. twice this year. Thank God.

By the way, for those wondering, the Area 51 Soundtest is a 3-day music festival thrown by the Las Vegas Jamband Society every year in the middle of nowhere. This will be their third year. Last year, Dark Star Orchestra was the headliner. I know that the promoters were talking to moe., Particle, MMW and Galactic about playing this year, and it looks like they've got moe. and Particle lined up. Excellent news for me.
