No doubt Audiogalaxy had some pretty hard to find stuff. I could care less if they blocked out what was popular. Go to Kazaa for that. Personally, if Napster is the trendsetting badboy, I have no idea why it took so long for the RIAA to go after Audiogalaxy (I know the systems were set up a bit differently). I mean, it's been two years or so since Napster starting caving in and it took them THIS long to go after AG? As mentioned, it's just time to move on to the next site, but I will miss AG.

I only used AG for rare songs, long out of print and stuff that was released on vinyl only. I have no problem with paying for the music I listen to, but if it's unavailable to purchase anywhere, this is how I got it. RIAA also needs to drop CD prices down to around $10. I rarely buy any major label stuff new since I can easily wait for it to be in the used bin for about $5-6 or get it through Columbia House for about $6 average each membership. When I go to record stores, I only buy indie label stuff, which is usually priced much lower than the majors. Perhaps the RIAA should look at their pricing structure, weak mainstream artists and the tendency for labels to clone whatever artists are hot before blaming filesharing services for music sales declines. Hell, since I started using AG last year, I've purchased about 800 CDs. Just that most of them were from non RIAA affiliated labels.

That's prolly why they're pissed. YOU'RE not buying enough Brittany.

I shed a tear for AG.

News article: Music industry groups win fight against Audiogalaxy

I'm upset to hear this because, after a couple of years of searching off and on, this was the one file sharing service where I was able to find From Good Homes' "Ballad of Todd and Tracy." It was never released or studio recorded and I came very close to buying/swapping a live show just for that one song.

In somewhat related news, I bought Wyclef's new CD at Circuit City today (even though his last one wasn't all that good) because it was reasonably priced at $7.99.

The whole Audiogalaxy thing makes me want to throw up. I have been a loyal user of Audiogalaxy for a year or so. I have never once downloaded anything that I could ever hear on local radio. I have only downloaded albums that have not and will never be released in the States. Kazaa seems to go too slow for me, and I've never had much luck with Winmx. So, rest in peace Audiogalaxy. They completely spoiled me with those rare songs and people with actual good taste in music, and now I will have to go into Audiogalaxy detox.

Is WinMX.com shut down?

I was wondering if anyone else who uses the WinMX.com music download site has experienced problems signing in? Has it been shutdown? I have been unable to sign in for about a week now. Any input?

[Reminder]

Filesharing is a problematic area of discussion because of the rule against "bootleg" threads: valid discussions about "legal" material, software etc. etc. have the inherent risk of breaching the rules outlined in the sticky thread atop page one.

As a result I am trying to keep all this kind of thing in one place. The co-operation of all DVDTalk members in using the sanctioned thread (this one) is again requested.

Thanks in advance for your understanding.

I have a question about my burner:

When I download those songs that "are legal" to download
and I burn those "legal" songs...sometimes at the end of every song...the songs plays like one or two extra seconds of that song...before going to the next song.

Why is that?

Is the detail to broad?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know myself. I had WinMX loaded on my PC and they said I needed to download the new update. So I did and my PC locked up every time I tried to use it, blue screen of death. I dumped it and loaded Shareaza off CNET.com.

I had 3.20 so 3.22 is the update. As I said it crashed my PC, a P4 with 768meg of RAM, after loading the 3.22 so I dumped it. So I can't say I've had any luck with WinMX.
