I'm now left wondering if there are (m)any good, long songs by artistes other than the hard/prog-rockers....
Now there is a challenge!

November Rain- GnR
N*ggas Bleed- Notorious B.I.G. Great story telling and the characters seem real it out played like an old ganster flick
Purple Rain- Prince, gave the same vibe as November Rain at least for me.
Jeremy- Pearl Jam I think the video really did it for me.
Janie's Got A Gun- Aerosmith
Stan- Eminem dark and frightening And the best use of a sample in any rap song IMO

While it would be easy to list any number of Dream Theatre, Fates Warning, Symphony X or even Savatage songs, I'll think I stick with a flat out Rock song:
"Wasted Time" by Skid Row
In my opinion it's one of the few truly epic songs that really isn't trying to be that way. It just is.

Not really long songs but in terms of epic sounding check out DOVES': "The Man Who Told Everything" and "The Cedar Room" (album: "Lost Souls") and their latest single "The Goes the Fear" from off their most recent album: "The Last Broadcast."

Not necessarily long, but come on, Tribute's the 'Greatest Song in the World'
