I'm not quite sure what the law says but I think you're allowed to do this as long as the song is "public domain". Second, IIRC, when he did that awful ripoff of "Kashmir" back in 98 he had either Page or Plant's blessing(One of them even performed with him on SNL doing the song). They're as much to blame as that not talent scrub.

Nothing has gone into public domain since about 1957. I think "The Jungle Book" was one of the last things to pass into public domain, and Disney promptly snapped it up and made a movie out of it. The last copyright law passed actually removed things from public domain.

Currently, it's 75 years plus the life of the author. So, anything published in your lifetime will not go into public domain while you're still alive.
