Hehe..

"Back to your cave. Get yourself together
Silly and Magilla. Chocolate and vanilla.
How could polar Bears swing on vines of the gorillas... please!"

"Think befor you step upon the rebel silly mortal you
you! I tried to warn you but your mind won't catch, you're just cookies in my oven
if I want to burn a batch you just burn...VAAAANGLORIOUS!!!!"

"Them niggaz don't have permits and them takin the bridge"
What can you do, what can you say?
Life in the zero, the game we play
Fist up to get down, always ready to step
And if they hit me with that stick yo man I'll break your beck
I'll walk with the lions, stalk with the elephant
Pivot like gorilla, pigs become irrelevant
And you persist with legalities
I resist and rebel cause I'm reality
And while I'm boomin this, I'm not a Humanist
I'm just a pro-black ***** and I'm doin this
And don't you try to prove, that you can make a move
Because I'm outraged devil, it's a different groove
And if you come again, this sh*t'll never end
And we will fight through time through the very end
You get my point son? You get my point dad?
I'm goin back to your caves and I'm quite bad
I do a war dance, and cause a avalanche
And do the great pimp strut cause I'm a black man!"

...simply brilliant! Arguably the greatest rapper in HISTORY

I agree, I love that cd, best 7.99 I spent all year. Its one of those cheap cds at bestbuy so there isn't no reason you shouldn't go pick it up!

Old school in tha house :)

Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded is classic stuff
Eric B. & Rakim - Paid In Full is more classic stuff
Public Enemy
Ice Cube
NWA
Just Ice
Heavy D & the Boys
Dr. Dre & Snoopp Dog - Who else brought the Deep Cover soundtrack just for their hit debut song? Also, can't say enough good things about "The Chronic"
Beastie Boys
Biz Markie ("the star of the show")
Big Daddy Kane
Marley Marl (DJ, I know, but his "In Control vol. 1" is one of the best rap albums ever)
A Tribe Called Quest
EPMD - That break up hurt me more than the NWA one.

I still listen to most of these on a somewhat regular basis :)

I've listened to that cd soooooooo many times, I actually had to burn it again. Track 16 is the most unbelievable thing I've ever heard.

Thunderball 05-17-02 08:16 AM

 Blackalicious. Very cool indeed.
They still can't top my Lost Boyz however. :)

dancinns 05-19-02 02:20 AM

Some of my favorite non-mainstream artists:
Mos Def
Pharoahe Monch
Lost Boyz
Benzino (The Benzino Project is great stuff)
Made Men
Beatnuts
Common
Digital Underground
Kardinal Offishal
Baby Blue Sound Crew

isamu 05-19-02 01:06 PM

Don't forget The Egyptian Lover:D

Scorpio 05-19-02 02:12 PM

I'm not really into rap, but I do like Us 3; kind of acid jazz hip-hop. Actually, I do have one album by Rob Base & DJ E-z Rock. :o

Ralph Wiggum 01-30-03 04:18 AM

Buy the new Common album, "Electric Circus." :)

The Bus 01-30-03 07:31 AM

Some artists I haven't seen mentioned yet:

Jedi Mind Tricks

MC Paul Barman
Favorite line: "Have I made a mockery of a culture like the Choco-Taco? Am I to rap like was France was to Morocco? Am I colon rap colon colon France colon, Morocco?" ( Mc Paul Barman : Rap :: France : Morocco)

Haiku d'Etat (Favorite song: "Non Compos Mentis")

Also, a friend of mine swears by Mr. Lif and Jean Grae. I also fondly remember Count Bass-D and MC and the 900 Ft. Jesus.

mc_delta_t 02-04-03 01:02 AM

bah, that album was garbage, they were trying to experiment, but they didn't, they didn't do ANYTHING with structure, it was all one beat, verse chourus, sometimes bridge, chorus, very boring

phrenology was a little better

i liked kwelis quality alright

i am REALLY into outkast right now, i was never a big fan, and i got atliens and aquemini

aquemini is now one of my favorite all time albums, jesus it blows my mind

and, in the past year, i have garnered an appriciation for a lot of mainstrem hip-hop, nore, cam, some nelly, jay, not that any of it is great, but a lot of it is pretty entertaining

dulli 02-04-03 11:09 AM

There has been a lot of great stuff mentioned...

would the last emperor fit on this list?

I didn't feel it much at first either, but after multiple listens, it really grew on me. One of the best releases of the mainstream year!

I agree, but alot of people are hating on this one. The Roots alway come correct.

An alright release, not even close to the "quality" of Reflection Eternal.

Props for knowing who they are. Everyone should have McEnroe-Disenfranchised, some Josh Martinez, some Sixtoo, and some John Smith.
