2112 isn't really *a* song, it's a collection of songs, no?
In today's pop music, anything over 5 minutes seems long to me. But my roots are in 70's rock, so I'd say songs over 8 minutes are long. Not that long is bad, though!
Some of my favorite "long songs": Roundabout, anything off "The Yes Album", Foreplay/Long Time, Kashmir, Carouselambra, and anything by Rush. All in the 8-12 minute range I guess...

I haven't seen this show on there yet but you guys should check out Furthur (www.furthurnet.com). It's like napster but it's all live shows from bands that allow taping. Another good place to find a lot of live music is the mailing list from etree.org but only if you have high speed access.

5 minutes and longer is LONG.
Of course, length has nought to do with a song's quality; if several minutes of a song is just dad space though, it feels so much longer.
I disagree with those who say songs under four minutes are way too short. Check out the Von Bondies' "The Fever", one of the best rocks songs of recent years. It'll take you two minutes and forty seconds...

I'm with Jnuke, the original poster. 4:30-8 min. is average. Anything under is just short.
I think 8-13 is a good length. But I listen to prog, so that is normal length. I have a cd from a band called Green Carnation called Light of Day, Day of Darkness. It is one song, 60+ min. long. That is a bit much. But on the other hand 6 degrees of Inner Turbulence by Dream Theater pushes 45 minutes and it doesn't seem long at all. Same with Change of Seasons by them. 23 minutes and it just seems like it could go longer it is so enjoyable.
Add to the list of classics over the 8 minute mark(8:32): The Who: Won't Get Fooled Again. It is a shame it is butchered on CSI: Miami.

well I only listen to hiphop or hardcore, where is in hip hop over 4:30 is long, and most hardcore the songs are less than 2 mintues, and some clocking in at 45 seconds
