I've gotten the bug to buy about $200 worth of indie (or relatively unknown) CDs again, so I need some good suggestions. Rock, ska, punk, girl bands, lo-fi, live, whatever.

So what are your favorite indie bands that I don't know about?

If you're supercool you could include links to their website where I can download some samples. If not, that's fine, I can use a fileshare, mp3.com, or any of the 90 indie mp3 websites out there.

I dunno if these were every posted before but:
Beulah - The Coast is Never Clear
Death Cab for Cuties - any of the cds
Placebo - Black Market Music (i dunno how indie that realy is)
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
The Anniversary - Your Majesty
The Prom
Dashboard Confessional
Further Seems Forever
Arthur (side band featuring singer of MxPx)
are some of my favs

I dunno if they are "indie" or not, but check out Wilco. They used to be more alt-country, but they are now kindof experimental rock. They don't sell too many cds, but they are definitely the rock critic's band. Their website is www.wilcoworld.net

There's a really good one called MusicTalk.

Some suggestions off the top of my head:

Ba$$holes - extremely lo-fi rock n roll blues

Gories - garage rock/blues with one of the meanest growls ever (w/ my hero Mick Collins)

Demolition Doll Rods - garage/glam rock, some serious chick attitude

Gaza Strippers - superfast rock w/ Rick Sims (Didjits)

F(*)ckemos - Evil twisted post-punk similar to Butthole Surfers

Big A$$ Truck - Driving jam band with turntables, has some great grooves

The Now Time Delegation - garage soul, very well done w/ Tim Kerr

Dirtbombs - Mick Collins again going all soul

The Screws - Mick Collins with a little more punk

Speedball Baby - loud, raucous country tinged

Candy Snatchers - awesome punk

Tarbox Ramblers - old jug-band/fiddle type revivalists

The Oblivians - soul/punk/garage/rock/blues just fierce, loud, and abrasive

Compulsive Gamblers - Oblivians in another incarnation harking back to the Stones and some country flavor

Holly Golightly - sweet, sweet bluesy voice (does a lot of stuff with Billy Childish)

Zeke - superfast speed/garage/punk

The Deadly Snakes - Big band blasts out great rock, awesome energy

Knoxville Girls - lean, mean country with a New York flavor, great guitar work

Eleni Mandell - another sweet voice and great songwriter can growl and swoon on the same note

Ok, I'll list some bands too.

Swingin' Utters -- their old stuff is like '77 punk, The Clash/Stiff Little Fingers. Their new stuff has a folk/country mixed in which I really like.

Filthy Thievin' Bastards - Swingin' Utter singer's side project. All folky -- a lot like the Pogues. (check out the Pogues too)

Flogging Molly - Awesome Celtic/Punk band. Great live.

Thrice - Melodic punk with some nice screaming choruses.

One Man Army - '77 style punk.

New Amsterdams - similar to Dashboard Confessional (recommended above)

Dingees - They're a Christian band, but not preachy. Punk/Reggae/Ska

Calibretto 13 - christian band, very preachy, but good stuff. Sort of Violent Femmes on speed.

Rezillos - old school 70's punk

If you like Lagwagon, check out the singer's side project:

Bad Astronaut

or Billy Joe of Green Day's side project:

Pinhead Gunpowder.

Actually Penny Lane, Wilco sells an average of about 150,000 copies of each album, which is pretty good considering their limited commercial appeal.

And Breakfast, here's my list of favorite albums from this past year, should you feel inclined:

Quote:
Unwound, Leaves Turn Inside You (Kill Rock Stars): Unwound took a huge risk by making this behemoth. Their first album since 1998, Leaves incorporates the band's penchant for the atonal with a layering of guitars worthy of My Bloody Valentine.

Cannibal Ox, In Cold Vein (Def Jux): If Brian Eno decided to produce a hip-hop disc it would sound like this. Free-flowing in the truest sense of the word — no choruses, no hooks, just intricate wordplay and atmosphere.

White Stripes, White Blood Cells (Sympathy for the Record Industry): The infamous aside overheard in modern-art galleries ("My kid could do that") applies to the White Stripes' third long-player, which is part of its charm.

Low, Things We Lost in the Fire (Kranky): Melancholy and restrained, this album still has a feeling of optimism in each song, even if it's just that the depressing can be so beautiful.

Beachwood Sparks, Once We Were Trees (Sub Pop): California boys pretend they're Gram Parsons. Oscar worthy.

Calla, Scavengers (Young God Records): A great mix of pastoral guitar work (à la Ennio Morricone) and Terry Riley-inspired found sounds signals a collapse of rural and urban America, while Aurelio Valle's voice effortlessly glides over the top.

Spoon, Girls Can Tell (Merge): Britt Daniel wants to be Elvis Costello badly, but with Girls Can Tell he has moved past the My Aim Is True-esque anger that fueled 1998's overlooked masterpiece Series of Sneaks. Still, Daniel's pure pop songs can be extraordinary, especially "Me and the Bean" and "Chicago at Night."

Lift to Experience, Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads (Bella Union): Could there be a more timely release than a concept album about the apocalypse? Melodies are reminiscent of Jeff Buckley, but the accompanying music is guitar-based noise.

The Rapture, Out of the Races and Onto the Tracks EP (Sub Pop): The best Gang of Four imitation in a long time. The hi-hat snaps open at the right moments, the guitars chink and chime, and Luke Jenner's screams accent each discordant note perfectly.

Various Artists, Troubleman Mix-Tape (Troubleman Unlimited): The selection on this double-disc contains a fantastic hodgepodge of noise rock, punk, avant-garde and two truly bizarre vocal clips from Barry White and Miles Davis.

And if these lists were longer than ten...

Brian Jonestown Massacre, Bravery, Repetition & Noise (Bomp)

Death Cab for Cutie, The Photo Album (Barsuk)

Dismemberment Plan, Change (De Soto)

Bob Dylan, Love and Theft (Columbia)

Fugazi, The Argument (Dischord)

Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, The Tyranny of Distance (Lookout)

Love as Laughter, Sea to Shining Sea (Sub Pop)

Shins, Oh Inverted World (Sub Pop)

Tortoise, Standards (Thrill Jockey)

Okay, Yancey. Sorry; I sometimes forget that you know EVERYTHING about them.

Comparitively, those are NOT high sales for an album. They may be high for a band with "limited commerical appeal," but they are NOT mainstream and there are many people who have not heard of them.

Wilco's last album came out on Warner Bros, and their next one is on Nonesuch.

This makes them, in my mind, a major label recording act.

Indie music is music by independent artists. It is not (again, to me) music that has a limited appeal or even a certain kind of sound.

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (Matador Records) - Perhaps the most "rock & roll" band recording today.

The (International) Noise Conspiracy (Epitaph Records) - Like the Blues Explosion, only socialist.

Elgin Park (Enjoy Records) - Witty and humorous pop rock, as catchy as the Beach Boys.

The Gourds (Sugar Hill Records) - The best American roots music played by anyone right now.

moe. (Fat Boy Records) - A jam band with great hooks taboot.

String Cheese Incident (SCI Fidelity Records) - Another jam band and a mixture of folk, bluegrass, funk, jazz and rock/pop.

Pavement/Stephen Malkmus (Matador Records) - Critics' darling for years now and deservedly so.

I would definitely agree with this. Wilco are not an indie band.

As far as the album sales thing -- I wasn't trying to be a jerk Penny Lane, I just saw those numbers a few months ago and they surprised me, so I thought I'd mention them.

That's just sadistic Steve! Are they supposed to listen to every one of them?!? To confuse things even more (and to be a dick to Steve), I put a note next to each saying what I thought. Man that makes me look like an as$hole, which I'm sure many here will find appropriate.

This goes for stevet (or whatever) as well: I never SAID THEY WERE AN INDIE BAND. I said I didn't know if they were considered an indie band. They ARE featured on indie websites, I know that for a fact.
The first of the documentaries you are talking about was about Woody Guthrie, NOT Wilco. And if you notice on the actual DVD, they get very little air time. That's hardly what I'd call a documentary about them as a band.

In addition to this, they ARE NOT mainstream, especially in the South. They may not be an "indie" band, but they are far from being well known. You can talk to maybe 15 people on the street here in Birmingham, and maybe one of them, if that, knows who they are. That's what I meant, and I simply assumed that Breakfast with Girls might not know who they are and was possibly missing out if he liked that kind of thing.

Right. And I expressed my opinion of what it means to be an indie band, and that I thought that they weren't.

Well, so is one of my favorite bands: Built to Spill. And BtS sells fewer records than Wilco, are known to fewer people than Wilco, gets less press than Wilco, etc. But they are on Warner Bros, and for this reason alone are not an independent band. They are, like Wilco, an "alt" band (a band that appeals to people who like non-mainstream music), but I don't think that "alt" (or whatever you want to call it) and "indie" are the same thing.

Agreed with everything you said so far (except that my username is stevevt, but a lot of people get that one wrong).

The thing is, Breakfast with Girls said that he was looking for indie bands.

Obviously, I can't speak for BwG, but I think it's great that you were helping him, and promoting a band you clearly care a lot about.

If anything, I was trying to suggest that independent music is not a genre. There is independent country, rap, pop, rock, etc. That's all I was saying, and I did it because BwG specifically mentioned the phrase "indie bands."

You're really making me look like a dumbass, haus. I know that independent music is not a genre. I didn't mean to suggest that the were, and I'm sorry if you thought that was implied.

For the record, they were an independent band for about 6 months, between Reprise and Nonesuch.
