U2 7 -- reviews?
Anybody have the new 7-track target-exclusive U2 CD that came out yesterday?
U2 Targets Rarities Disc
Collection of remixes and B-sides available exclusively through retail chain
A collection of U2 rarities will be released on January 22nd, exclusively through Target stores. U2 7 will include seven previously unreleased tracks by the band, including B-sides and remixes.
Among the tracks on the album are new takes on "Beautiful Day," "Walk On" and "Elevation," from the group's latest release, 2000's All That You Can't Leave Behind. Also included is an acoustic take on "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" and the B-side "Always," which was actually the blueprint for "Beautiful Day."
U2 and All That You Can't Leave Behind are nominated for eight Grammy Awards including Album of the Year and Record of the Year; the Grammys are set for February 27th in Los Angeles. The group will also perform as part of halftime festivities at Super Bowl XXXVI on February 3rd.
U2 7 track listing:
Summer Rain
Always
Big Girls Are Best
Beautiful Day (Quincey & Sonance remix)
Elevation (Influx remix)
Walk On (Nigel Goodrich mix)
Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of (Acoustic)

All the songs are from the All That You Can't Leave Behind singles. Since Interscope never bothered to release any singles in the U.S., the cd is an affordable alternative to trying to get all these songs by buying the imports.
Summer Rain - jangly, mostly acoustic guitar song
Always - offshoot of Beautiful Day, with a similar chorus
Big Girls Are Best - bass-driven song left over from the Pop sesssions
Beautiful Day (Quincey & Sonance remix) - dance remix
Elevation (Influx remix) - this is the mix they used to start their live shows (with vocals)
Walk On (Nigel Goodrich mix) - a little closer to the way they play it live, with the "hallelujahs" at the end
Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of (Acoustic) - acoustic guitar version w/Bono & Edge
I prefer these last 3 - new versions of their stronger songs. The 3 original songs are ok, but not quite as good as the ones that made it onto the full album. I'm not wild about the dance remix.
I hear that the initial shipments of cds sent to the stores are all that they will be getting (don't know if that's true or not). The Target website is also selling it.

That way the Britneys, the 'Nsyncs, the Nickelbacks, the Limp Bizkits and the Creeds will continue to be viable musical acts.
What the HELL was I thinking?

I was at Target last night so I took one. It's pretty good, and I love the beautiful day remix, but if it goes up in value, I'll have no qualms about eBaying it (after a copy, of course)

And to think I scoured the Best Buys to find the double disc version of ATYCLB just to get the CD single of Always. Oh well, now I can use that double case to hold this CD set instead. I like most of it. Always is still my favorite of the new tracks, though they're all pretty decent. Love the acoustic number. I hate to dasagree with the above poster, but I thought that Beautiful Day dance remix was AWFUL. A train wreck. The best band in Rock & Roll should not be doing dance remixes (just MHO). Don't worry about availablity of the disc. My local Target had well over a hundred out on a display stand.

What exactly is your problem? I said I wasn't buying the CD because I had all the tracks already. Take your crusade somewhere else, nutcase.

The Target that I got mine at had probably 30 left and a large empty rack underneath them, so it looked as though they were about to run out.
The acoustic number is my favorite.

Well, you are aware that many, many people do have MP3's? Correct? Why not pointing out your opposition to the format next time instead of doing what you did this time around.

While he's being a little rude, he has a valid point. Too many computer geeks, that acutually like good music, get everything on MP3, which takes away from record sales of the good bands. The labels see these poor sales and are hesitant to sign anymore of those type of bands. However, kids and Joe Six Packs, buy up all the crap albums out there, they go multi-platinum and we're forced to suffer through more crappy music on the radio, in chain stores, on MTV etc. I personally believe that the poor state of mainstream music has been aided by the proliferation of mp3's.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the format, only against people who abuse the format for the sole purpose of saving money. Use mp3's to test out new albums and bands, if you like it, spend your money on the album and reward the band for their good work, and in the process of buying the album encourage the label to sign more bands like them. You're also rewarding yourself by getting a better sounding copy of the music that you can easily play anywhere.
However, I realize this a pointless argument for many, as the people who only download mp3's and never buy cd's aren't going to change. They only care about saving money, they don't care about the artists financial rights, or the damage it does to the music industry.

I admit it was a slanted argument. It just seems that most people that have large amounts of mp3's (and use them in place of buying cd's) have better taste in music that joe six pack, hence I imagine mp3's hurt the U2's, Deftones, Radioheads, etc. more than the popular crap like Creed, Nickelback, N'Sync, Britney Spears, etc.
Of course that's just a theory, and I have no evidence to support that.

GOOD
Getting back to the original topic...I think this an excellent CD. Though I had most of the songs elsewhere, I don't have a burner so it was worth $7 to get them all together, and to add the acoustic Stuck in a Moment. Walk On is also great, though I agree that Beautiful Day is rather annoying as a "dance" mix...

Count me in as wanting to purchase this CD. I've got dozens of U2 rarities and would love to have them all. This band's b-sides are frequently better then most of the tracks on their albums!
