Bands that quit at their creative/commercial height

The bands that got worse over time got me thinking about bands/acts that actually quit at their creative height, a la Michael Jordan (the first time), Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, etc.

I'm excluding anyone whose career stopped directly due to death (Hendrix), but not whose careers were derailed by death (Velvet Underground).

I'll nominate

The Beatles - Last albums were Let It Be and Abbey Road. Tough to top

The Smiths - no bad albums I recall

Velvet Underground

A Tribe Called Quest

Why him? Assuming he has quit, his commercial peak was in the 80's, and he has done an album or two since then.

Now Wham!, on the other hand, might qualify.

Blind Faith

(only one album and released with a number of times with different cover art, but it was great!)

...and I guess you can add Cream to the list here, which broke up shortly before Blind Faith was briefly formed too, with many of its members.

Guns N' Roses. Killed off by grunge and the destructive tendancies of their lead singer. A shame really, it's some of the best guitar-driven music to come out of the late 80's.
