First of all, Welcome to the forum. 
I think overall DTS is better (from my own personal experience)...There ARE differences but, I don't know the technical jargon and I'm sure it would be hard to understand if one wasn't a techie.
This can be a pretty heated topic in the forum, and can quickly turn into an argument...but I dug up this thread for you:

I was wondering because I thought I'd buy the Jurassic Park DVD and saw there were 2 versions, one with DTS and the other with dolby digital, damn it's hard to make these kind of decisions when you don't know much about the stuff
