Where is the best place to get DVD-Audio. Need a little help.

I only own a few DVD Audios. Check www.kencranes.com and www.amazon.com for DVDAudios. Both sites have alot to offer.

If you dont like online shopping try Best Buy. I hate them but they do have a section for them.

Is the audio that much of an improvement from a standard CD? Do you need a souped-up audio system to notice any difference?

I saw the BestBuy section and the selection of DVD audio seems primarily by artists under Sony.

Most of the "DVD-Audio" discs you find at best buy are just DTS or Dolby Digital encoded music, both, being a lossy compression mechanism, doesn't sound as good as uncompressed PCM found on normal CD's, but they do provide 5.1 channels of sound, which IMHO is unnecessary for music, unless maybe it's a live performance..

True high quality DVD-Audio requires a player that is designed for the higher sample rates, like 96khz. This means it needs a higher quality DAC, which adds to the price. So yes, you can get higher quality with DVD-Audio, but you probably won't notice anything with cheap equipment, and even with high end equipment, the difference is probably only slight.

Then there is the competing format, Sony's SACD.. I personally would wait to see what comes out on top..

I've been impressed by some of the recent releases of surround, 5.1, sound. Early discs seemed to try to make a technology showcase statement to show what could be done. The newer discs have a more natural sound and don't overload the surround channels. We are in a time of transition with music. Downloads are increasing and CD sells are decreasing, multi-channel movies sound tracks are becoming the expected norm. So music companies are looking at DVD-Audio (and SACD) as answers to both problems, a salable format which complements all the growing multi-channel home theater systems going in to homes. DVD-Audio may only be a stepping stone to the next big thing but I beleive the multi-channel idea will only expand in the future.

Actually, CircuitCity.com seems to be the best place to buy DVD-A discs currently. All Warner titles are 13.99, plus if you buy 2 or more titles, shipping is free. Note, you cannot buy DVD-A discs in the actual CC stores, only online (next year they are supposed to have DVD-A sections but who knows if their prices will be higher).

The worst place to buy DVD-A discs is Best Buy. They are charging 22.99 for many Warner discs which is higher then their MSRP.
