It's pretty hard to beat Planet of the Apes. Also, the final shot of The Searchers is pretty great.

I always liked the final crane shot in The Untouchables.

And the final shot in Star Wars.

According to the IMDB, the intended final shot was to show the Golden Gate Bridge completely covered in birds, but it was too expensive to pull off. That would've been surreal.

Cruising - did Pacino crack?
Sunset Boulevard - "I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille"
Glory - with the mass grave.
Willard - The head rat watches Bruce Davison's death approvingly.

I also think Usual Suspects.
MIB was also kind of amusing.
Fists of Fury
Con Air
Disturbing Behavior
Mummy

I know it is kind of corny, but I always liked the final sequence in Titanic where old morphs into new.

nazz 03-21-01 08:58 PM

This one's a bit obscure but who remembers...
Electra Glide in Blue with Robert Blake as the motorcycle cop?

Collin 03-22-01 07:53 AM

Not sure if it's my favorite, but it just stood out in my mind.

The Big Combo - With the light in the background and all you see are the shadows of two people. Oh and of a wheelbarrow too!

Men in Black
From Dusk till Dawn
Batman
Iron Giant

Braveheart

Castaway had the nice CrossRoads shot. But I think the godfather.... Micheal having his hand kissed, the door shutting while kay looks in. Cinematic perfection.

Amadeus 02-02-03 06:42 PM

The Godfather
Amadeus
Do the Right Thing
LOTR Fellowship
Spider-Man
Back to the Future
Se7en
Fight Club
Brazil
Robocop
Eyes Wide Shut
The Silence of the Lambs

So many of the ones listed above are great, but I'd just like to add the final shot in Once Upon A Time In the West. I think it's really great.

You beat me to it!

Two recent ones - Adaptation (it all comes back to flowers) and About Schmidt (the last ending to make me watery-eyed).

Also (I believe most of these have been mentioned):

2001
McCabe and Mrs. Miller
Vertigo
E.T.
The Last Temptation of Christ("It is accomplished.")
8 1/2
American Beauty("You may not know what I'm talking about, but believe me...you will.")
Barton Fink
Vanilla Sky
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
The Deer Hunter
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

And, of course, The Graduate

Groucho 02-02-03 11:23 PM

Some great choices already mentioned. For movies I would say, The Godfather. "A picture is worth a thousand words" is true!

I would also like to mention a television show. The last shot of the pilot of "The Shield" is a humdinger.

CKMorpheus 02-03-03 10:55 PM

Series 7 - When we find out who the contestant for Series 8 is! MWAHHAHAHA!

 Pure balls on the part of the filmmakers.

Some mentioned, some not:
Titus
Fight Club
Rushmore
Three Days of the Condor
All the President's Men
Dark City
Heat
Last Night
Shawshank Redemption

Most have outstanding musical accompaniment as well.

ryuryu2949 02-03-03 11:40 PM

- Shawshank
- Carlito's Way (gotta love it)
- Usual Supsects (obviously)
- Godfater Part II (all at the table)
- Spartacus
- Mallrats (Jaws/Suzanne)

Zinger 02-04-03 02:23 PM

Shawshank Redemption will always be my favorite final shot.

Recent flicks: I really liked the end shot of Gangs of NY with the city "modernizing".

cultshock 02-04-03 04:53 PM

Surprised no one mentioned Evil Dead 2. Talk about right out of left field! (of course, this is assuming you saw the film way back when, before knowing about Army of Darkness).

Also agree with already mentioned:

Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Thing
Fight Club
Hard Core Logo
Cruel Intentions (maybe its just because I love the song "Bittersweet Symphony")
Evil Dead 1
