James Hong though not a big a star as others people mentioned is 96 and surprised Sophia Loren is still around at 91, Rosemary Harris at 98, and Eva Marie Saint at 101.

Hope I did not jinx any of them.

Just learned Hackman, Duvall and Hoffman were struggling roommates in New York City in the 60s. Wonder if they used the same acting coach and/or - undoubtedly - shared acting insights because all three had that effortless ability to absorb into characters internally despite not much physical change. Just such a masterful command of their craft regardless of what type of film they were in.

I read somewhere that Hoffman quoted Duvall as explaining why these three didn't get parts from auditions. I wish I could find the exact quote, but Duvall basically said that the way they were trained was to just read the lines cold on first reading and then explore the characters in subsequent rehearsals and have it nailed by the time they do their parts whereas those actors who scored on the auditions would give everything they had in the auditions and then have nothing else when they did the parts. Something like that.

I didn’t see it mentioned unless I missed it of course, but Walter Hill’s Broken Trail is a very good movie as well.

His parts in Broken Trail, Open Range and Lonesome Dove were quite similiar and all of them were awesome.

Not a great movie or great performance, but very enjoyable

I don't think it was mentioned before but he debuted at Boo Radley in "To Kill A Mockingbird"

While I considered myself a big Duvall fan, I recognized that I had a couple really big holes. Tonight I watched Tender Mercies for the first time. While Duvall is great, it's not a particularly showy performance so in that respect it's (good) unusual that was honored with the Oscar.

It wasn't a particular strong year, so a good performance by an actor who could have won sooner was honored. I watched The Handmaid's Tale over the weekend and while I prefer the series, I have to say that Duvall's performance as Fred stood out. The movie is basically a highlight version of the first season so in the series all characters are fleshed out much better and I'd say all performances are superior, but while Joseph Fiennes has a lot more time to build his character, Robert Duvall just has greater presence. I had a few movies of Duvall left, which I didn't know. The Handmaid's Tale was one of them and while I enjoyed it, I'm happy I got introduced to the story by the series and not the movie.

They’ve all won it too.

Not to be confused with the box office conciliation prize Oscar that Will Smith and Sandy Bullock have. Although Bullocks doubles as a white saviour oscar too.
