The Fall Guy (2024, D: Leitch) -- The Reviews Thread

He’s a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment. And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. What could possibly go right?
From real life stunt man and director David Leitch, the blockbuster director of Bullet Train, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and the producer of John Wick, Nobody and Violent Night, comes his most personal film yet. A new hilarious, hard-driving, all-star apex-action thriller and love letter to action movies and the hard-working and under-appreciated crew of people who make them: The Fall Guy.
Oscar® nominee Ryan Gosling (Barbie, La La Land, Drive) stars as Colt Seavers, a battle-scarred stuntman who, having left the business a year earlier to focus on both his physical and mental health, is drafted back into service when the star of a mega-budget studio movie—being directed by his ex, Jody Moreno, played by Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place films, Sicario)—goes missing.
While the film’s ruthless producer (Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham; Ted Lasso), maneuvers to keep the disappearance of star Tom Ryder (Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson; Bullet Train) a secret from the studio and the media, Colt performs the film’s most outrageous stunts while trying (with limited success) to charm his way back into Jody’s good graces. But as the mystery around the missing star deepens, Colt will find himself ensnared in a sinister, criminal plot that will push him to the edge of a fall more dangerous than any stunt.
Inspired by the hit 1980s TV series, The Fall Guy also stars Winston Duke (Black Panther franchise) and Academy Award® nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

Officially opens tomorrow, but early screenings start Tonight at 7pm. This is technically the 1st "summer blockbuster"
I believe this has already opened in some international territories.
I'm catching this tonight. From everything I'd heard and read, this is basically a love letter to the stuntman.

Just got back from seeing it. I’d give it 4 out of 5 and a B+
There is a fun introduction from Leitch and Gosling before the movie begins.
Overall, It was really fun. Great action and stunts. Also it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is totally hamming it up as the cocky movie star. Gosling and Blunt do have good chemistry. As mentioned before, it’s definitely an ode to the stuntman profession.
Stay through the entire credits. And there are also two cameos.
And yes, “The Unknown Stuntman” is played on the end credits. But, Gosling isn’t singing it. They do re-work some of the lyrics as the original song is super dated.

I have my ticket for a tomorrow 12:45 pm showing at the AMC Newpark Dolby theater. I have to say that I was not surprised to see that the weekend forecast on Deadline for this film is maybe $28 million (which is low for a $100 million+ budgeted film) because the theater had tons of seats still open.
The showings for Ghostbusters and Kong X Godzilla had Sat early matinee showings where most of the primo seats in the Dolby theater (I saw both film in the same theater I am seeing The Fall Guy) were booked at least 3-5 days before the films release on a Friday. The Fall Guy is far from even 1/4 of the theater being booked at least as of a few hours earlier. Maybe word of mouth will kick-in and the film will have legs at the box office, but despite what seems to be great marketing for the film, folks are choosing not to attend this weekend.
I would say blame it on the weather, but at least in the Bay area it will be slightly wet Friday night into Saturday, and pretty cold this weekend, so it does not seem like great let's do something outdoors weather that would keep folks from theaters and on the road to go the beach or something like that.

Saw it tonight. I’m really torn about this. Not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, it was cute, fun and had some really good stunts. Gosling and Blunt are super charming and attractive and have great chemistry together. On the other hand it was SO STUPID. Like way stupider than it needed to be. There were wild shifts in tones, at some points it’s supposed to be kind of a paranoid thriller, then suddenly everyone acts as dumb as parents on a Disney Channel sitcom. If they wanted to make a comedy, it should have been much funnier.
Also were other viewers as confused as I was about Colt’s relationship with Jody at the beginning? It sure looked like they were just flirting and had a crush. Then suddenly it flashes forward and they’re resentful spurned ex-lovers. If they were supposed to have a deep, important relationship, it sure didn’t seem that way.
And the less said about Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Hannah Waddingham’s characters, the better,
I didn’t dislike it, but damn I wish it was less silly and dumb.

Holy shit! It was a real film?
And while we're at it, Jody went from camera operator on an action film to director, actively shooting a big-budget blockbuster in 18 months???

Caught this today. It was a lot of fun. Shame it's not doing so well. I hope its underperformance doesn't harm the effort to call more attention to stunt performers.

I loved the use of the KISS song in it that got a half star bump for me. I gave it 2 stars
The trailer for this looked incredible. What a shame it was done so poorly. The 2 cameos at the end

I think the prologue made it abundantly clear they were having a fling and getting serious before his accident. In terms of the overall tone, I figured the comedic approach wouldn't be for everyone.

My wife and I just got back and had a blast. The tone was perfect, Blunt and Gosling were incredible. Loved Duke and everyone else in the cast too.
i haven’t laughed like that at a movie in a long time. The unicorn bit was HILARIOUS.
Shame it didn’t do well - we could use movies that had more fun.

I also really enjoyed this. I was smiling through most of the movie. The soundtrack was amazing as well.

I knew Metalstorm was an 80s movie, but I had no idea that the tagline used in The Fall Guy was the same one the movie had used.

One of the fun things about seeing this at the Alamo is they showed the original Metalstorm trailer during the pre-show before The Fall Guy. I had no idea why they showed it but once that became clear it was even funnier.

Coming to PVOD on Tuesday
I enjoyed the movie. Sucks that most people passed on this as a theatrical experience.

It doesn't mean I think any individual title would benefit from it, it's just in general.
I am curious what the sales numbers are on these titles via PVOD, I assume most just watch it on bootleg platforms.

This - might as well put it out and make some money on it since it has good word of mouth but apparently not good enough to warrant going to the theater.

Just FYI…the extended cut is 20 more minutes than theatrical, which clocks in at 2:06.

The extended cut is really long-winded.
seemed pretty mediocre overall.
Maybe one day I will watch the theatrical cut to see if it flows any better.
