The Old Jedi finally got out to see Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. My verdict? Not great but not completely terrible. I could have easily waited for streaming, but hey, my birthday movie coupons aren’t going to use themselves.

I will say, this movie could have used a decent Justice League DCEU cameo, but I understand things are gearing up for DC to completely revamp their approach to their comic book heroes and villains.

The story is pretty standard, with little in the way of real surprises. Arthur Curry AKA Aquaman is basically splitting his time between running Atlantis and raising his infant son. Also, there’s a subplot concerning the retrieval of another trident that ends up pulling Aquaman’s imprisoned brother Orm into the story, and they work out their differences to stop a threat to Atlantis.

Parents, be aware, in addition to some PG-level language (s**t, a**, and a couple of incomplete F-bombs), there is the expected comic-book level violence which includes some baby-endangerment, and about three scenes where Aquaman gets pee in his mouth from his baby and an 8-armed sidekick. Oh, yeah, some intentional cockroach munching by Orm, including during the one mid-credit scene.

I am giving Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom 2.5 out of 5 lightsabers. Here’s hoping that whatever James Gunn and DC comes up with is more memorable than this.

Interesting that the first DCEU ends with somebody eating a cockroach.

I will say if you did not like or hated the 1st movie, this is definitely not for you. Watch something else.

Yeah it's 90% CGI. Some of the underwater creatures didn't look very good. They looked like exaggerated cartoons. The dialogue was a little corny and Black Manta ended up being a lame villain overall. He died at the end because of his hatred for Arthur that he wouldn't let him save him from falling to his death. The bigger evil was a actually dark force from Atlantis' past.

The highlight for me was the interactions between Momoa and Patrick Wilson. Their banter was great. when Arthur called Oram "Loki" And then told him to eat a cockroach because it's the shrimp of the land. The mid-credits scene ties into it. It's a goofy scene and isn't mandatory to stay for. My theater started chuckling at it. I got some laughs and I saw Momoa has a writer credit, so I think he probably did interject a lot of himself in Arthur this time around.
Just got back and agree with all this. It was a fun standalone movie. There was even more world building which is a shame given the DCEU's demise. The highlight was Momoa and Wilson. I was surprised how much they turned Orm around. Despite liking the first movie I couldn't stand Orm in that one. A lot of the humor fell flat for me though. It probably didn't help that there were only about 6 other people in the theater. I did enjoy Martin Short and John Rys-Davies in their roles.

It was CGI overload though. The movie needed more real world land action. Seemed like the first film had a better balance in this regard. Also a lot of the action was just a mess of shit on the screen. Shit blowing up and debris everywhere all the time.

No references to anything from the DCEU.
I'll disagree here. If the DCEU was continuing then this stand alone is great as is. Since this is the final film of the DCEU they should have blown it out with cameos for the fans.

I get where you're coming from, but that's almost what they did with the opening (and, to a lesser extent, the post credits scene) of The Flash.

So was the cover art made monochromatic so as to not stand out on store shelves? That is assuming any stores are still carrying physical media.

For those curious, this wasn't a complete disaster even though it still lost a lot of money. It's the 8th highest grossing movie in the DCEU all-time. It may have enough legs to tie or pass Black Adam, but it's heading to digital next week.

Pretty sure Aquaman was only in the green & orange in this film. I don't recall that outfit at all.

That was the stealth suit he wore when he rescued Orm.

Wow. Did this blow!

Terrible from start to finish. Deserves its poor reviews. I’m sure did ok bo, but this was one of the worst in DCEU whatever. Momoa who I usually like, was like a comic to Wilson’s straight man. Did Amber Heard have a word in this movie?

Anyway, it was just awful acting, script, effects. I could hardly tell when they were under water. Mantas/David was a terrible baddie. Park, I always enjoy. That Loki comment Arthur made was dead on.

And, most of the film is on land, or at least in dry surfaces, which is weird, considering the movie is about a character literally named Waterman.

Fun movie, I would watch an Arthur/Orm "buddy cop" movie, lol. Liked that it was those two for the bulk of the movie. I'm glad the "shrimp of the land" came back, lol.

Yeah, this was a fun movie. Yes, the ending felt like a needlessly blatant ripoff of the ending to Iron Man, and final "fight" felt like they ran out of money. However, the overall adventure was a lot of fun. The Orm/Arthur dynamic is exactly what I hoped for after the ending of Aquaman. I would have liked more Mera, but, even without all the behind-the-scenes troubles, she was always going to take a backseat for this outing. I just wish they hadn't written off Volko the way they did. It would have been nice to see him back.

I thought this was OK. Nothing mind-blowing or life-changing, but a good way to spend a couple hours if you've already gotten everything productive for the day finished and have absolutely nothing better to do. The end with them standing on the ice in kind of a post-victory "well, so we did that" moment was a little anticlimactic, and Arthur's mic-drop at the end was pretty cringey.

What are you trying to say? That OldBoy is wrong when he says it received a lot of bad reviews?

This was all sorts of awful. Wow. Absolutely hilarious how they went out of their way to show Heard, but barely give her any dialogue.

I mean, I am ok with this film. It's nothing Oscar worthy but it's slightly better than the first film just for Wilson/Momoa alone. Momoa obviously has fun doing these and his over the top performance is similar to his Fast X character. I'd prefer this over, say, The Phantom Menace.

I'm all for Mamoa's BDE. The guy needs to get into the right roles to make us movie nerds love him.

This movie was so bad. File it away as a "really bad big budget sequel".

What comes after comic book movie trend ends? I feel like we're going to find out in the next few years.

It's pretty much the opposite of that. The movie was pretty much shot before she lost her marbles. They had to creatively excise as much of the character as possible without reshooting.

Yeah, this one was just fun and I'd give it the nod over the first which tried to throw in three full movies into one script.

I knew from the opening scene that this would be trash. Cringed alot to bad lines, awful CGI, and more....but I sat through it only with the assistance of cannabis

One random thing I wondered is the Asian scientist. He's in the Marvel comic universe too. I don't remember his name, but I think he was also a scientist. Same character or just same actor in both universes?

I think I have this superhero fatigue thing I've heard about

Randall Park - he’s an FBI/SWORD agent in the MCU. Super weird that the actor was in this movie too.
