Polite Society (2023, D: Manzoor) Pakistani martial arts action-comedy

A merry mash-up of sisterly affection, parental disappointment and bold action, Polite Society follows martial artist-in-training Ria Khan who believes she must save her older sister Lena from her impending marriage. After enlisting the help of her friends, Ria attempts to pull off the most ambitious of all wedding heists in the name of independence and sisterhood.

Focus Features will release the film April 28.

Oh yea, I'll see that. I was interested when I saw this on the Sundance lineup. Looking forward to seeing the reviews coming out of the festival.

I saw this tonight, and it was a total blast. Can't recommend it enough. Where else are you going to see martial arts, gorgeous south Asian costuming and dance, and droll British humor? Lead actress Priya Kansara is an absolute delight. I might see it again on regular release.

I'm surprised. The trailer made it look awful. I guess I might give it a rent sometime.

I'm sure it helped that I saw it in a crowded theater, with everyone laughing at the jokes and cheering on the protagonist in her fight scenes.

Reviews mean little to me when it comes to making a final decision. Sure I can pick up on things and there are times I find myself swayed by reviewers I tend to agree with. However there are far too many instances where a movie gets glowing reviews and I'm left wondering if I accidentally watched the Asylum knockoff, as was the case with the horrible Brawl in Cell Block 99. I'm more swayed by word of mouth, even if that is not a 100% guarantee either.

Between this and Season 3 of “Never Have I Ever” I am apparently all-in on Indian and Pakistani culture.

This was a fun movie with likeable leads. I thought going in it was going to be more fantasy than “real” martial arts but the cast sold it. Got a real Scott Pilgrim vibe at times too.

Still pissed my local theatre showed the trailer a bunch but never actually played the movie (they did the same with Beau Is Afraid). I really wanted to see this on a big screen.

Actually, they even had a huge cardboard display.

Heh heh, I snagged the lightbox poster from my film festival after we showed it.

It was not bad

Premature to say it could get Oscar consideration?

Maybe the start of a big career for Priya Kansara?

Probably not Oscars, especially since they rarely award comedic work over Serious Films.

Independent Spirit Awards though, yeah.
