Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical (2022, D: Warchus) S: Weir, Thompson, Riseborough, Lynch, Graham

A brand new take on the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical. Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical tells the story of an extraordinary girl, with a vivid imagination, who dares to take a stand to change her story with miraculous results.

Matilda Wormwood (Alisha Weir) is a little girl with big curiosity, a sharp mind and a vivid imagination — and the worst parents in the world. While her parents (Stephen Graham & Andrea Riseborough) content themselves with trashy TV and dodgy money-making schemes, she loves to lose herself in the pages of her beloved books. Where they are loud, selfish and unkind she is a quiet observer, thinking up small and cheeky acts of rebellion and revenge. On meeting her inspirational teacher, Miss Honey (Lashana Lynch), Matilda is encouraged and begins conjuring her own fantastical tales. Excited to attend Crunchem Hall, Matilda is surprised to find the school is an ominous and oppressive place led by the huge and villainous Miss Trunchbull (Emma Thompson).

I’ll give it a shot. Thompson looks great in it. I love the DeVito one, so it will be hard to beat.

I loved the book when I was growing up, and while I enjoy the DeVito movie, I don't see it as a definitive adaptation, so I'd be happy to see another version of the story.

This was absolutely fantastic! I loved every thing about it. The songs, the dance numbers, the performances. They were all wonderful! Emma Thompson was great as the villain and the little girl who played Matilda was adorable.

This really should have been given a theatrical release. It deserves a lot more recognition than it will get on Netflix. It definitely deserves some awards recognition.

If you enjoy musicals (or liked the stage play) you’ll enjoy this. It reminded me a lot of Annie but with Roald Dahl’s twisted humor. I didn’t love the book but this had so much heart that the book was missing. I’ve also never seen the DeVito version but can only imagine this blows it away as well.

I dont know, the Devito one is pretty damn fun. This one is a musical/dance so it loses points already.

This was impeccably well done but just wasn't for me.

Haven't seen DeVito's version and I'm not really a fan of musicals, but this was really well done and a lot of fun. And Emmy Thompson knocked it out of the park. I remember I was in London when it was playing at the West End and I saw posters for it everywhere. Huge hit.

It was a great production, but felt a little too repetitive on how terrible the parents and principal were (originating from the book, I assume). And the songs weren’t that memorable for me. I know I’ve seen it on stage before but it didn’t really make an impression on me there either (and I assume I saw the old movie at some point). I’m glad a quality movie exists for fans of the material, though.
