Thunderbolts* (2025, D: Schreier)

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel Studios’ top-secret Thunderbolts movie looks to have gained momentum as Deadline has learned that Jake Schreier is set as director of the new Marvel tentpole. Black Widow scribe Eric Pearson is penning the script with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige producing.

Not much is known about the plot of film other than it revolved around a group of supervillains (or at least characters who have played bad guys at one point in MCU) who go on missions for the government. Another element that remains vague is which character will be part of this team since the film it technically still is in development, though sources say Marvel has been in touch with certain individuals who already are part of the MCU to make sure to keep an opening in their schedules for next summer when it shoots.

That said, some of the characters that potentially could be starring or making some sort of appearance include Baron Zemo, Yelena Belova, Ghost, Taskmaster, The Abomination, US Agent and the Winter Soldier.

General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross is also a possibility since he is the person in the comics who assembles the first team — hence the name — but that is unconfirmed as no deal for any actor has closed.

While the town has been buzzing about The Fantastic Four directing search quietly ,which has only begun meeting potential candidates, the studio has been focused on Thunderbolts ODA, and according to insiders, Schreier presentation in recent weeks blew away execs and ultimately landing him the job.

Schreier, who cut his teeth directing classic Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar music videos, broke onto the scene with his 2013 Sundance darling Robot & Frank. He also directed 2015’s Paper Towns, recently wrapped production on the A24 and Netflix series Beef and has directed episodes of FX’s Dave. He is repped by CAA and Grandview.

Baron Zemo, Yelena Belova, Ghost, Taskmaster, The Abomination, US Agent and the Winter Soldier
Sounds more like that hypothetical Dark Avengers project than Thunderbolts.

But the MCU has a pretty shallow pool of villains to draw from.

When you can’t even get the basic facts of the comic right…. (Baron Zemo formed the first team - there’s been a lot of them - which could be cool as I thought Daniel Brühl did a great job as him and he’s one of the few “villains” who’ve survived their initial MCU appearances)

Well, Dark Avengers were basically the Thunderbolts going back to their original concept of masquerading as heroes (except led by Norman, which I assume isn't happening here). Makes sense to do it now when there's not really an Avengers team of note, though I highly doubt Winter Soldier would join this group.

With William Hurt dead (not to mention a rapist), how are they going to handle Thunderbolt Ross?

Bring back Sam Elliott?

What, you don't want Loki or Thanos to be the villain in almost every other movie?

Still waiting for them to roll out Doom and Galactus.

If you believe the leaked concept art that has been out there,
Spoiler:
you won’t be waiting long for one of them to make their first appearance.

Sam Elliott can do no wrong. He was the best version of the character anyway.

That sounds awesome - what a cast! It’ll be fun seeing all of these characters together.

Excellent cast! I was sort of hoping for Daniel Brühl’s excellent Zemo as well in the mix particularly as that’s a big tie to the comics versions, but he might also be a good choice for the antagonist now that I think about it.

That's an awesome cast right there (a mix of A- and B-listers) but some one is missing...
Spoiler:
I wonder why Tim Roth's Abomination isn't in the group? Has he truly changed his ways and retired the creature in favor of his 7 consorts? (See She-Hulk Season 1, Episode 3)

Maybe they can let Taskmaster have an actual personality?

Yeah, power level wise they're lower than like Suicide Squad level so I wonder if the plot is going to be mainly espionage/government stuff (which that teams seems better suited for).

Because he has beautiful hair? Or because he's Steve's one true love? The movies did a good job of convincing us Steve cared about Bucky, and we cared about Steve, but I have a hard time even coming up with Bucky's greatest moment from the movies. Granted it's been a long time since I watched First Avenger, but other than twirl Rocket around on his shoulders during Infinity War, what did Bucky ever do that was cool or interesting? He has an entire movie named after him, but he's barely in it and for the most part his face is covered and he doesn't speak.
