Yeah it's not doing that bad though I guess it had a large budget to recoup. Doesn't hurt that the Teen Kraken movie bombed hard so this is the default family movie right now. My kids thought that one looked horrible--I didn't think it looked that bad but there you go.

This wound up at $478m worldwide, that's not too shabby. They definitely need to get their budgets in check but still, it outperformed Indiana Jones, Ant-man and Wasp: Quantumania, all the DC movies, John Wick 4, etc;

I went ahead and overspent on the Best Buy steelbook. I figure I got so many of their Disney/Marvel steelbooks for $10 back a couple years back, that I can justify a few full price steelbooks from them.

Watched this on Disney+ with my kids. It was actually a lot better than I expected. After the first few minutes I was expecting a Romeo + Juliet story, luckily they didn’t go all-in on that tired story. Of course there were a lot of clichés in there. Rich boy/poor girl from the wrong side of the tracks, cultural themes about parental pressure and creating you own path, etc.
I doubt my kids caught much of the allegorical culture stuff even though it was all pretty obvious. I did really like the dinner scene with Wade’s water family. They were all making comments trying to be nice but were really unintended digs at Ember’s culture. It was a brief scene but probably my favorite in the entire movie.
I still didn’t care for the character designs but I guess, what are you gunna do when animating water and fire? I still think Pixar, in general, does lazy character designs.
Overall, a lot better than I expected.

It ended up being exactly what I expected. Also hated the character design. Almost none of the jokes were funny. The immigrants allegory was really heavy-handed. I found it pretty boring too. Not the worst film I’ve seen or even the worst Pixar, but really bottom-tier stuff. Did nothing for me. Sorry.
