Re: 2022 Academy Awards
It was a silly but imo very watchable series. The odd duo of Melissa McCarthy and Bobby Cannavale being the best part of it.

Re: 2022 Academy Awards
Well that's disappointing...I'm not a die hard Oscar watcher (skipped last yr's) but I was planning to tune in. I still will, just on mute in between the awards.

Re: 2022 Academy Awards
I would have watched it just to see Martin, Short and Gomez. I’ll probably pass now. I can’t stand Schumer.

It's not just that it's a comic book movie, it's that it's got a lot of lore working toward it and expects you to be at least somewhat up to speed with the world. For folks that don't follow the franchises it is pretty hard to care. Mix that with academy members skewing older and that's a hard sell.
Spider-Man: NWH deserves a nom way more than Black Panther or Avatar ever did. |

Re: 2022 Academy Awards
Yeah I don't agree with that, but it deserved a nomination more than Don't Look Up did, that's for sure.

Re: 2022 Academy Awards
So who here doesn’t think these will be the lowest rated Oscars yet?

Last year was a pandemic aberration and this year there were at least movies in theaters to go see. The audience will still be slight, but it's going to be better than that. |
Re: 2022 Academy Awards
It will be the same ratings as last year or lower. The viewing public doesn't care about the nominated movies.
|
Re: 2022 Academy Awards
I think it will be a little higher, at least it has Dune and Don't Look Up as movies people have actually seen and presumably a performance by Billie Eilish to get a few kids to tune in.
I think the most popular movie last year was Promising Young Woman and well, yeah I still don't know any non-movie buffs that have seen that one. |
Re: 2022 Academy Awards
The Amy Schumer hosting gig is getting destroyed on Twitter. I'm not a fan of her, but I don't seem to hate her as much as everyone else...yikes

Re: 2022 Academy Awards
I liked her when her show as on but her stand up is pretty bad. She's one of three hosts, she'll be on screen for like a total of 5 minutes after the opening.

Re: 2022 Academy Awards
I like Schumer. I’m not a huge fan of her standup but I think she’s funny in her show and the one movie I’ve seen her in.
But yeah, for some reason she seems to be almost universally disliked. It’s too bad that’s the case but because of that it’s probably a poor choice of host by the Academy, if they are hoping to raise ratings. |
Re: 2022 Academy Awards
I watched Ali Wong's latest Netflix special yesterday. Now there is a standup who would've been good to put in the mix.
|
Re: 2022 Academy Awards
When I saw this line-up, my first thought was "Was Leslie Jones not available?". This is not going to go over well.
BTW : Each host will take over hosting duties for an hour, with Schumer going first. |

And yeah, Regina Hall is not ringing a bell with me at all. Second consecutive Regina to host though so that's.... something? Will Packer, who was hired in October to produce the Oscars telecast, explored several unconventional ideas for structuring the show, including the option to pair two hosts for each hour. Until this weekend, Packer was also in discussions to add the actor Jon Hamm as a fourth Oscars host, and invitations were also extended to previous hosts, including Chris Rock and Steve Martin. Martin was pursued for the role alongside his “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars Selena Gomez and Martin Short. But that plan was scuttled because of scheduling conflicts. |
Re: 2022 Academy Awards
Bets on the number of seconds into the show before Schumer mentions her va-jay-jay?

Re: 2022 Academy Awards
I liked Schumer in Trainwrecked and maybe she peaked with that movie.
Not excited about the hosts. I know it would never happen and not sure if he would be interested but Marc Maron would be a good choice and he has interviewed most of the big stars in Hollywood on his podcat. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...d1584433e3.jpg |
