Yup. All three of those mentioned would've been better choices than the majority of the ones who were nominated.

A Nicolas Cage nomination would have made the whole ceremony worthwhile.

I’m actually pretty disappointed that he wasn’t.

JK Simmons was worthy of the nomination though. Even Kidman, fine. Bardem? He was OK, fine, good... but not Best Actor quality.

My buddy and I were rooting for Simon Rex to get a nomination. I don't think he'll ever match that performance again. Cage has been doing some pretty solid films again lately. So it is a shame he was overlooked for "Pig". I think it's his best work in probably 20 years. Hell, even Matt Damon in "Stillwater" deserved a nomination over Bardem.

I didn't want her to win but not seeing Lady Gaga in the nominees was shocking. Also bummed Alana Haim didn't make the cut. Kristen Stewart seemed DOA after missing out on the Sags and BAFTA nominations.

Bummed about no Bradley Cooper nomination. Wasn't expecting best actor, but I thought best supporting actor for Licorice Pizza was almost guaranteed. That tells me Power of the Dog is far and away the front runner for everything, because I don't remember Jesse Plemons getting that much love before this.

I thought Jodie Comer should got a nomination in The Last Duel.

Re: 2022 Academy Awards

Just realized that Sorkin didn't get a writing nomination for Riccardos. Weird that the film got so much love and yet not for his Screenplay.
Dame Judy Dench was so far off the Awards radar for Belfast (a movie that I haven't yet seen) that I honestly didn't even know she was in it. Was it a very small part?

I have a couple changes I would make...the biggest problem is that this will be the lowest rated Oscars again.

We're about 5 years away from it being an E-Mail

It’s been two hours since the noms have dropped and Decker hasn’t mentioned Miranda is set up for another chance at EGOT status. What is going on???

Pretty low year in terms of the average box office of the best pic nominees... but this is going to keep happening when more are hybrid releases.

Eh, I am pretty sure this is Billie Eilish next stepping stone, but Lin-Manuel is going to keep trying. I haven't seen Encanto yet, need to check it out.

LMM will keep getting his noms. I think Eilish gets it.

They also chose the wrong song from Encanto (there's like 2 songs I would say aren't immediate favorites and they chose one of them lmao)

It's not even the box office. I also think it was a somewhat bland year for movies.

And that's how you fix the ratings problem.

Moonfall at the Oscars would even beat the Super Bowl next year.

I wonder when it was the last time a category like Best Actress had none of the nominees in a film that was nominated for Best Picture.

Things I’m happy about:

The Worst Person In the World getting 2 nominations, should have gotten Actress too.
Penelope Cruz
Paul Thomas Anderson, himself, getting THREE big nominations.
Kristen Stewart
The Power of the Dog receiving a stunning 12 nominations. Knew it would be getting a lot.

I think he's got a really good shot at the Original Screenplay Oscar. It's always a good thing for the Academy when one of the world's most respected filmmakers wins his first Oscar, even if it's not for his primary category. Hitchcock dying without a non-honorary Oscar was a really bad look.

I haven’t seen a whole lot, but I will say Gaga was robbed. She owned Gucci! Owned it! And that’s only 2nd acting gig.

Re: 2022 Academy Awards

I really wish Red Rocket would have gotten some love, at least for Simon Rex and screenplay.

Between that film and The Worst Person, my 2022 has been great.

Both soared into my Top 5 of the year for 2021 and maybe Top 3.

Red Rocket is on ITunes today.
