Blessed Virgin (2017, d: Verhoeven, s: Efira)
The film will be shot in French (under the title Sainte Vierge) and will star Virginie Efira who played the devoutly Catholic Rebecca in Elle. Here, she’ll take on the role of Sister Benedetta Carlini, a 17th century nun who was hailed as a visionary but later accused of fabricated miracles, homosexuality and other charges, and imprisoned for 35 years.
The film is based on the book Immodest Acts: The Life Of A Lesbian Nun In Renaissance Italy which was published in 1986 and written by historian Judith C Brown. Gerard Soeteman, who previously co-wrote Verhoeven’s Black Book, is penning the adaptation. Shooting is set to begin soon.
The story, which mixes religion with erotica and controversy, fits right into Verhoeven’s wheelhouse. Brown based it on papers she discovered in the state archives of Florence, according to a New York Times review when the book was published. Carlini entered the convent at the age of nine and at 23 began to have religious and erotic visions. She became Abbess of the Convent of the Mother of God, but later aroused suspicions by claiming to have had supernatural contact with Christ.

Anyway, I'm in. The fact it's from the author of Black Book makes me even more interested, I LOVED Black Book and found Elle pretty compelling.

Paul Verhoeven's "Benedetta" - "A sophisticated, steamy and entertaining nun-sploitation drama."
Premiered at Cannes, the BBC's Nicholas Barber loved it:
Benedetta: Five stars for Verhoeven's 'torrid melodrama'
I'm in for some Verhoeven goodness (he's 83!). Bonus, it's gonna piss off a lot of people.

Verhoevens never made an uninteresting movie, I'm most excited for this out of the whole cannes lineup

When and how can we see this? I thought Tricked and Elle were fantastic. Elle bordered on brilliant, as did, of course, Huppert and glad she got nom at least. I need to see this on digital or physical ASAP.

^ If you haven’t seen it, also check out Black Book. It’s a top notch WWII drama.

IFC Films has set a December 3, 2021, theatrical and VOD release date for Paul Verhoeven’s steamy Cannes hit Benedetta.
The anticipated movie will open in New York at the IFC Center and Film Lincoln Center and in LA at the Royal and The Alamo Drafthouse.
The French-language film debuted in Cannes and will get its North American premiere at the New York Film Festival.
Benedetta, which had tongues wagging on the Croisette, follows a 17th-century nun in Italy who suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions. She is assisted by a companion, and the relationship between the two women develops into a romantic love affair. It is based on Judith C. Brown’s book, Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy.

His flicks run the gamut in terms of quality but damn if I'm not at least somewhat entertained by a vast majority of them.

Scissoring nuns... how can this not be amazing?
Of course the young nuns are hot, or no one would watch this.

IFC had been marketing with a Dec. 3 VOD release, but lately, they are only saying theatres. Regardless, I'm sure VOD will follow shortly after.

If you see one lesbian nun movie this year.
Pretty good movie. A lot is going on, not just lusty nuns. A comet appears, the plague is an ongoing problem. And there's a question as to whether a miracle happened with Benedetta. Throughout the movie she has these visions where she's the wife of Jesus. When things get violent, it happens fast and furious. Photography is lush and warm, much like the naked nuns. The acting isn't bad, at times over-the-top. Showgirls in a convent.
