The Marvels (Captain Marvel 2) (2023, D: Nia DaCosta) S: Larson, Vellani, Parris

Officially in development. Eyeing a 2022 release.

Marvel is moving the action from the 1990s to the present day with scribe Megan McDonnell.A sequel to Marvel's billion-dollar-grossing Captain Marvel is officially in the works.

The company has tapped rising scribe Megan McDonnell, a staff writer on the Marvel-based series WandaVision, to pen a script for a follow-up to the 2019 pic that starred Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson. McDonnell is in final negotiations to seal her deal.

Sources say that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-wrote and directed the initial film hit, will not return to helm the sequel but are in talks to remain in the Marvel Universe and direct a possible Disney+ series. Marvel is hoping to find a female filmmaker for Captain Marvel 2 and is eyeing a potential 2022 release.

Marvel has been mostly mum on Captain Marvel 2. The Disney division’s head Kevin Feige did tease it at San Diego Comic-Con in July during the company’s Hall H panel, when at the very end of the session he blurted out, "We didn't even mention that we're making Black Panther 2 and we didn't mention that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is coming. We didn't even have time to talk about Captain Marvel 2, by the way. I didn't even have time to talk about The Fantastic Four. And there's no time left to talk about mutants."

Captain Marvel was Marvel’s first female-centric movie and proved to be an overperformer at the box office, generating over $1.1 billion worldwide.

McDonnell is a relatively new writer, with WandaVision her first major credit. The upcoming show is a spinoff that will air on Disney+ and brings back Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as Avengers heroes Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, and the Vision, respectively. The project, currently in production, also brings back the Captain Marvel kid character of Monica Rambeau, now an adult. In comics lore, Rambeau was an iteration of Captain Marvel. McDonnell began the show as a staff writer and then was promoted to story editor.

She is repped by Verve, Good Fear and Gang Tyre.

Unless it becomes absolutely dreadful I'll probably pick up the BD when it comes out. Unlike some of you, I liked the first one.

I enjoyed the first one well enough that I’ll see the sequel. I was pretty underwhelmed with her role in Endgame though and feel like she could have waited to be done until after the Infinity Saga wrapped personally.

I liked it and Larson as Capt Marvel, but the first movie could have been a much better story. It’s definitely the weakest of the MCU character origin movies.

I didn’t think the origin was bad. I liked the stuff with the younger Nick Fury. He played pretty well with Carol/Captain Marvel. I like Brie Larson as an actress, but I don’t think she’s been written the best in the role so far.

Disagree. I can't reconcile the younger Nick Fury to the one in the "present" MCU. Too much of a drastic character change in two decades.

I’ll throw out Niki Caro, Karyn Kusama, Olivia Wilde, or Lynn Shelton as suggestions for directors.

Hope they go cosmic in a big way with this one. I mean, like Celestials and Living Tribunal kind of shit.

Aside from Thor 2, Captain Marvel was probably the weakest film in the MCU up to this point.

Of course I'll be watching this one anyways, even though the lead couldn't act her way out of a paper bag.... but I'll watch it when it hits streaming platforms.

I thought of her too... but she just seems too green to me. Though, that doesn't seem to be the biggest issue in the Marvel machine. She said in her THR roundtable that she was approached to do a Marvel movie. It may have been for something else. I think one day she will for sure.

From recent reports it sounds you won't have to wait that long as Feige said they are gonna really show the Celestials in The Eternals movie. Living Tribunal will surely make an appearance somewhere down the line. In the words of Thanos, he is inevitable.

With regards to the movie, well i enjoyed the first one, but it was no where near a top tier Marvel movie. I never like a character that is practically unstoppable from the moment they appear, and this was the case here. It makes the character much less interesting. Personally i would love to have seen the mantle of Captain Marvel be taken up by both the male and female versions in the first movie with the male version running through the "Death of Captain Marvel" somewhere down the line. Also i would love to see the proper Supreme Intelligence floating head in the giant Jar in a sequel and was disappointed it was shown in the first (with that pathetic excuse that no one can ever truly see it).

As for Brie, i have liked her in movies before, although i do think that Room is a little over rated, and whilst she looked the part as Captain Marvel she plays it too much of a character with a continual chip on their shoulder. Maybe thats how she was directed to play it, but in the end it makes the character hard to ever really like in the same way as an Iron Man or Thor (who certainly started out with a chip, but that was as written and the character has evolved). So sure they can improve in this area, but Brie herself needs to shut the fuck up in press junkets. That whole rant about critics all being white guys and needing more diversity was cringe worthy and stupid. If Feige had any sense he would have taken her aside after that and said "Look, heading a Marvel movie series is laughing all the way to the bank. Just look at how much Downey, Evans and now Johannsen have made. But never forget, Norton wasn't around long enough to reap the rewards."

Well, if you're concerned about her being overpowered, that could be soon to be rectified with the X-Men's introduction to the MCU, especially if they're interested in doing Rouge right this time.

I think it's easier to bring her in for a sequel than for new IP. Not that there isn't source material for one to research, but there's a baseline to start from in the form of Capt. Marvel's previous film and appearances. Though, I think she'd probably do very well directing something on a smaller scale with a personal story like the announced Ms. Marvel.

I saw some rumors floating around that claimed Rogue, as part of a mutant terrorist group, will be a villain in this.

Rogue and Carol certainly have a history in the comics.

Doubt they'll go there, though.

It would be too soon.. there hasn't been enough to warrant the loss of her powers yet. Maybe in Capt Marvel 3.

I wouldn't be surprised if they started dropping X-Men characters/mutants randomly into upcoming movies.

Like, say, Rogue in Captain Marvel 2.
Storm in Black Panther 2.
Wolverine in just about anything.
Magneto in Wandavision.

I'd rather they not reveal Wolverine right away. Let some other X-Men characters shine and build.

In fact, I'd rather they not reveal Wolverine for at least a decade.

I’m sure that won’t happen. Disney won’t let a big character like Wolverine sit idle for that long.

Magneto needs to not be used again for years.
