Yeah agree with Mike86 on "John Wick" they are good, and i like aspects of it like the Hotel, but I don't get the obsessive love for the films. Though I suspect it has a lot to do with the love society has for K Reeves and the fact that a man is going all out for a dog.
Deadpool...Annoying as fuck character with a diehard annoying ass fanbase. The movie was ok. Best parts were NOT Deadpool himself. I'm still trying to work up the want to watch DP2.

The problem with Blazing Saddles is that many of it's references have completely faded from pop culture. For instance, when Slim Pickens first shows up his line is "What in the wide, wide, world of sports is a' goin' on here" That was funny because in 1974 there was a popular TV show called The Wide Wide World of Sports. And few people in 2021 know who Hedy Lamarr was so the running gag where Harvey Korman's character keeps getting called Hedy instead of Hedley is completely lost of most modern viewers. It's actually still a very funny movie but I can see how a lot of it is lost on today's audiences.

People say "The Family Guy" will have the same problem in 40 years.

The horror movie I don't "get" (at least in terms of popularity) is Session 9. That always seems to creep up on a lot of "best of 21st century" lists, and I've given it two full viewings. I just don't see what's so amazing about it.

Let's be honest - Family Guy has that problem now.
My go-to is always The Fifth Element. I know people who love that movie. I've seen the fandom go crazy for it online. I do not get it AT ALL.
It is single-handedly the worst sci-fi/fantasy movie I've ever sat through that should have been great (meaning they had a budget and legitimate actors). Everything from the character design to the premise to the embarrassing overacting...it is just awful. Whenever I hear someone praise it, I think "we can't have seen the same movie".

It is. And I kinda agree. He was much better in Ballers as a cocky football player than in either this or Tenet, IMO. I feel he is better suited for comedy rather than drama roles.

It took me a few tries to get through Fellowship of the Rings without falling asleep half way through. I'm not sure if I've ever been able to stay awake to the end of 2001 Space Odyssey either.

You're just too nice a guy. People watch movies about assholes who win, or read Garfield comics, or watch sitcoms where the characters insult each other for thirty minutes -- because they identify with the assholes and wish they could be like them. Steal a million dollars, kick Odie off the table, say nasty things and get big laughs . . . that's who they want to be.

A few more would be Midsommar, Hereditary and the Witch. Three completely boring movies that everyone in the horror community seem to love. Midsommar I get the most grief for. I never want to see it again. They managed a feat with that one though fill it with completely unlike able characters that you want to see die, then take forever and a day to get there. Jesus get an editor at the very least. One thing I did appreciate was the daylight. Not a lot of horror is willing to do a whole movie in the day.
I was going to throw the Lighthouse in there, but I’m going to rewatch that one to be sure. I remember really appreciating the acting and the cinematography.

This is the main one for me. I saw it in the theater with friends in college and took multiple breaks to go outside and smoke because I found it to be such a grating experience. My wife loves it, so I tried again when we started dating ~15 years ago and still found it grating. I bought her the 4k disc as a gift and will probably end up giving it a third try at some point. I know people who love it to such a degree that it almost feels like there’s something wrong with me for disliking it so strongly.

Braveheart is, I think, an awful and simplistic movie. Can't believe it won Best Picture in a really good year for movies (Apollo 13, Heat, Dead Man Walking, Casino, Seven, Leaving Las Vegas). Some cool battle scenes, but that's about it. The worst mustache twirling bad guys, bad acting all around, Mel Gibson's unhealthy fixation on all things torture.
The thing is Gladiator is basically the same movie with better acting and while it's still not great, I do think it's much a better film.

“I found myself remembering the day in kindergarten when the teachers showed us Dumbo, and I realized for the first time that all the kids in the class, even the bullies, rooted for Dumbo, against Dumbo's tormentors. Invariably they laughed and cheered, both when Dumbo succeeded and when bad things happened to his enemies. But they're you, I thought to myself. How did they not know? They didn't know. It was astounding, an astounding truth. Everyone thought they were Dumbo.”

I don't get the love for the original Blade Runner. I've watched it multiple times and finally came to the conclusion that after I strip away my appreciation for the art direction, special effects and world building, I hated the muddy miserable plot. It drones on so much that it's a great napping movie.
Also, I thought Parasite was overrated. The story was enjoyable, but I didn't see as any kind of masterpiece.

I liked both Deadpool movies just fine but I agree that he’s kind of an annoying character. The wise cracking, smart-ass hero has been done to death over the years. It basically feels like an ‘R’ rated version of Jim Carrey’s The Mask which was also annoying but at least it was annoying 25 years ago when I was younger and had more tolerance for that stuff.

Blade Runner is a good one. On paper I should like it. It’s Ridley Scott in his prime, stars Harrison Ford in his prime, and is a sci-fi film which I generally am a fan of. I’ve tried to watch it numerous times and I just can’t get through it. It has a cool look and the idea of the film is good, but it just doesn’t do anything for me.
Deadpool was good. I can see where some might not like it though. His schtick of breaking the fourth wall gets old after a while. Deadpool 2 is really not very good if you ask me. I’m not sure how he’s going to work in the MCU when he eventually is brought in.

As far as the John Wick films go, they are just kind of imitations of HK crime films w/gun play like the John Woo films of the late 80s and early 90s. Watchable but once it's over you kind of forget about it and it doesn't have much re-watchability to me.

So stupid and the soundtrack is awful and maybe with the sensitive culture today it would not be made which would be a good thing.

Movies that I think are great that you guys don't seem to like: Vertigo, Cronenberg's Crash, The Changeling, Parasite, Antichrist. My best friend says that I have the highest tolerance for pretentiousness that he's ever seen, so that may factor into things.
Movies that I've never understood the love for:
The Princess Bride - I love William Goldman, Rob Reiner has directed two of my all-time favorite movies, the cast is great...and it all falls completely and utterly flat for me.
Session 9 - I found this film to be a big cheat, and I've had zero inclination to revisit it since my only watch probably 20 years ago.
Event Horizon - For me, this is claptrap, pure and simple.
A Nightmare Before Christmas - Forced whimsy isn't something that I'm terribly fond of, and that's what I feel that this film offers in spades.
Donnie Darko - I don't hate it, but I don't think that it's any sort of a classic, either.
The lone film that I've done a 180 on is Hereditary. When I saw this in the theater, I didn't like it at all. But each of the two times that I've watched it since then, I've appreciated it more. It's now one of my favorite horror films of the past 20 years.

Re: Popular Movies You Just Don’t Get
I think the John Wick movies are fun in quick bursts, but over the course of 2 hours they start to drag. They remind me of watching other people play video games. I don't get that either, but some people dig it. Maybe that's the appeal?
The Fifth Element is a good one. I've never really gotten that movie. A few years back I took a class on contemporary French cinema and it was on the syllabus. I was super excited because I wanted to hear the professor's take on its importance/quality. Unfortunately class was cancelled one week for weather and that was the film that got bumped. I guess I'll never know.
And if anyone thinks the Godfather is the story of some asshole winning in the end, then all I can say is that you must be watching a different movie than me. The whole point is that Michael is the good one who becomes an asshole and loses everything.

Re: Popular Movies You Just Don’t Get
This thread feels like my time to shine. Honestly I believe a lot of what I’m about to reference comes across as “meh” today because I’ve seen the tropes that were inspired by them and then made them fresh by improving upon them. I feel that that The Godfather and Blade Runner are my biggest movie examples. I’d almost rather have a root canal than sit through a double feature of these. Then there’s books like Dune which are just painfully dull, even though I can see the influence it created within the genre. Even music, like the Rolling Stones is just dreadfully dull as hell imho, although I still manage to love The Beatles and Elvis.
