Michael Cera, Emilia Jones Join Glen Powell in ‘The Running Man’ (Exclusive)

Yes, film fans, it's a 'Scott Pilgrim' reunion for Cera and director Edgar Wright.
October 25, 2024 2:40pm

Michael Cera and Emilia Jones are lacing up their shoes for The Running Man.

Both actors have closed deals to join Glen Powell in Paramount’s adaptation of the Stephen King story that is being directed by Edgar Wright. For Cera, the move reunites him with the filmmaker behind one of his beloved roles, that of romantic slacker Scott Pilgrim from 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Josh Brolin, Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding) and Lee Pace are already on the call sheet for the feature that is due to shoot in London at the top of next year.

Jones will play a privileged woman blind to the oppression of the government opposite Powell’s Richards.

Cera will play a naïve rebel who tries to help the desperate man.

Brolin, meanwhile, stars as the ruthless producer of the game show, O’Brian will play one of the contestants on the show, and Pace is playing the brutal chief hunter tracking down Powell’s character.

Paramount is releasing the film on Nov. 21, 2025. Simon Kinberg, Nira Park and Wright are producing.

Colman Domingo To Play Game Show Host in Edgar Wright’s ‘The Running Man’

Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Last Night in Soho) is directing a new take on Stephen King’s The Running Man, and the adaptation has found its game show host in actor Colman Domingo (Candyman, “Fear the Walking Dead”) per Deadline.
The Running Man will now release in theaters on November 7, 2025 after shifting from its original November 21 date.

Glen Powell leads the film. Karl Glusman (Watcher), Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding) and Daniel Ezra (“A Discovery of Witches”) also star. Furthermore, Josh Brolin was cast to play the central antagonist behind the violent reality show. Lee Pace will play chief hunter Evan McCone, and Michael Cera is set to play ally Bradley Throckmorton. Rounding out the cast so far is William H. Macy as another who will assist the film’s protagonist in some way.

This is brewing into something good. Something very good. Powell is my new man crush.

I don't get why he's becoming a movie star. I think he's as colorless, like Sam Worthington.

He has way more charisma than Sam and if you have seen any interviews with him he is super down to earth. It also appears he is really easy to work with and not being a diva on set can spread the word for other roles.

In partial defense of Sam, he has much more charisma when using his natural speaking voice. The strain of putting on an American accent seems to take much of his focus when acting.

The word from Ciinemacon a few months ago when they showed some footage is that this nothing even remotely like the 1980s Arnold movie. So don't expect a remake.

I assume it follows the novel more closely.

Which is a good thing. There's no point in trying to recapture the magic of the original movie. Best to do a more faithful adaptation of the book instead, to allow this movie to stand on its own merits.

So it actually could be as good as Total Recall with Colin Farrell.

That wasn't remotely close to the short story it was based on. And it was a perfectly disposable, although certainly not in the same league as the Verhoeven adaptation.

If it’s like the book, it won’t look anything like Arnold’s version. I love that movie as much as any child of the 80s, but it has virtually nothing to do with King’s original story.

The further they stray away from the 1988 film, the better

Looks like a lot of fun and appears to be a more faithful adaptation of the book (at least compared to the Arnie version).
