Directors who have gone down in quality?

Re: Directors who have gone down in quality?
Has no one mentioned James Cameron yet? If not: James Cameron.
He was on fire in the 80s with The Terminator, Aliens, and The Abyss. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is still spectacular and holds up nearly 30 years later...and then... *deep sigh*

Neil LaBute, Todd Solondz and Mary Harron are 3 indie directors that pop into my mind right now.

Huh. I think True Lies and Titanic are fantastic.

I've always felt Space Balls from 1987 was his best movie. I haven't seen too many after that that I can recall or remember very fondly.

I think Cameron got more caught up in the technology for movie making than the actual movies he was making. Kudos to him for helping develop underwater cameras and 3D tech but I wish he would go back to the basics of movie making. Maybe in 2047 when he’s done with the Avatar sequels.

Alex Proyas-started with The Crow and the criminally underrated Dark City. I' Robot was a typical blockbuster, but a commercial success for him. I heard at one point he was going to adapt Paradise Lost with Bradley Cooper as Lucifer/Satan and thought it sounded intriguing. Ultimately , it didn't happen and we got the god awful Gods of Egypt. After watching that, I kind of got the impression his version of Paradise Lost would have been similar with a bunch of CGI demons and angels duking it out with little to no relation to the work of Milton.

Bumping this thread, having re-watched Donnie Darko, I looked up Richard Kelly and he hasn't done a film in 15 years and his two follow-ups, Southland Tales and The Box, were not particularly good, the former especially was self-indulgent. Still, does Kelly have a reputation because there are plenty average or substandard filmmakers who still get work (for crying out loud, Len Wiseman directed the John Wick spin-off Ballerina). Maybe he gets by being a script doctor?

Has Spke Lee ever had a really long down period?
He had some misses but don't think he went into a prolonged slump.
M. Night Shyamalan had a down period and then came back with some hits but after Trap maybe he is in the midst of a slump again.

With the exception of Lady in the Water, all of his movies up to Old have been financially successful, and a couple of them have been pretty big hits.
Critically, Split is probably the most well regarded of his recent movies. The Visit and Knock at the Cabin were both received positively as well. But I like Trap, so what do I know.

Flip side
Kieslowski and Bela Tarr went up in quality.
Bergman
Huston
Kubrick
Kurosawa
All were masters right to the end.

Id say Ridley Scott has gone downhill too. The Alien franchise is a hot mess and all of his other projects are mediocre at best or just terrible, IMO.

Surprised no one has mentioned John Landis. Directed some of my all-time favorites to - shortly after the Twilight Zone incident - utterly dreadful embarrassments.

Should probably rename this in the last decade or two?
John Landis??? I don't think he as directed a movie that has been released theatrically for over 25 years.
