A few weeks ago I watched an old interview with Ridley on my Hannibal 4K disc. He said back then (2001) he never writes and isn't good at it. So it's really about the material that's given to him by the studio. He's more of a visual storyteller. The people who criticize him IMO give him too much shit for the writing when it's just his job to bring what's given to him to create visually.
I looked at IMDB and the writer of this movie David Scarpa last worked on the Amazon show The Man in the High Castle and also wrote All the Money in the world. He's also working with Scott on Gladiator 2. He doesn't have a big resume, but has a few decent credits.

It actually makes sense when you consider the fact that Scott (both Ridley and Tony) made a name for himself doing commercials. His job has always been to make something that generates interest in a product, but the product itself has to take things from that point.
In terms of the writer, he seems to be on a history kick. He's done this, the new Gladiator, and is credited with the Gal Gadot Cleopatra that's been in development for the better part of a decade.

I feel like we just need a moratorium on historical films and/or biopics for a while

Hadn't been paying attention to this, but saw some of the trailer and it has me interested. Well, that, and the combo of Scott and Phoenix all make me want to see it. But I must say the lack of French speaking and all the British accents in the roles did make be chuckle.

In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine, Ridley Scott confirmed that he is working on the Napoleon director’s cut, which is expected to be released on Apple TV+ following the film’s theatrical release on November 22. At the moment, the total running time for the director’s cut of the Joaquin Phoenix-led biographical war drama is currently over four hours long.
“I’m working on it. It was four [hours] 10 [minutes] this morning,” Scott said. “And so what will happen is, we’ll screen [the theatrical cut] first with Sony, and then it has its run, and then the perfect thing is that [the director’s cut] goes to streaming, and we have four hours 10 minutes.”

4 hours and 10 minutes. Wow. I'm definitely going to see this in the theater, but I don't know if I have it in me to watch it again at 4+ hours.

Catching it in IMAX on Tuesday. No Atmos showings at my theater - they have those split between the Hunger Games prequels and some other movie called Wish.
It will be in ATMOS once it hits ATV+, though.

One reaction I saw today said that there is animal violence, specifically against horses, that some may find disturbing.

Based on the length of the film, if I do end up seeing it in a theater it's gonna be one with those fancy, comfortable recliners, that's for sure.
