I should had as option, but too late. But other, I just have no idea, but something gets watched somehow is really all I can say. I know I have a problem, but until fixed, no new.

Re: How do you choose what to watch and when?

I have DVD Profiler, I've marked all our movies & TV shows as watched when we watch them. When the next movies or TV shows come up in the rotation, we'll go through a short bunch of them and choose one from that bunch (whatever we might be interested in watching at the time). That way, they all get watched. It takes 3+ years to make it all the way around the rotation but all of our movies & TV shows get watched eventually. Right now we're watching most of these for the 3rd time...

We always have a TV show going. Then on my days off we'll watch a movie, followed by 1 or 2 episodes of whatever TV show we have going at the time, to round out the rest of the evening.

Unless the power goes out.

I've watched a new blu ray movie every Monday night since Jan. 2010 and I just started 4k blu rays this year. Much more difficult to find 4ks to watch but I only need to find 52 per year.

Are you high?

By mood mostly. For instance, tonight I just felt like watching Taken.

Re: How do you choose what to watch and when?

I need variety so I'll watch something completely different than what I watched previously. Over the weekend, I sat through a classic WWII-based whodunnit followed by Drugstore Cowboy followed by a 60-minute no-budget sci-fi thriller.

People who are able to binge the same type of movie (action, horror, etc.) for hours on end absolutely amaze me. I would hate movie-watching rather quickly if I had to stick with a single genre or time period.

Pretty much just whatever I feel like watching, but mostly within the DVDTalk Challenge guidelines.

Sometimes i think of a film and think that sounds fun, most other times i have all my movies on a numbered spreadsheet and pick a number between 1-11000ish at random

Re: How do you choose what to watch and when?

Do I want quality or schlock? Drama, comedy, horror, or musical? What decade? What format? 3D, Atmos, mono, black and white? Something I've seen before, something new, something old I've never gotten around to watching? Animated or not? Movie or TV, or maybe a concert or music video collection? Film or video? So many questions.

When I can't decide, I just close my eyes and pick something.

Oldboy no offense, but didn’t you make a thread similar to this already? I’m pretty sure I recall it. Might have been in HD Talk though.

Re: How do you choose what to watch and when?

Outside of getting an itch for a particular film which happens about once a month if I'm alone I go through my unwatched films at the bluray site. If I have my kids I prioritize things they havent seen then unwatched media.

Re: How do you choose what to watch and when?

Before I was married and had to consider my wife's taste, I had a system consisting of catchprases which could be genre, actor, country or something else. I made a checklist every month and had to watch
- Nicolas Cage movie
- Western
- Asian morvie
- Animation
- Netflix movie
- TV movie
- classic movie
- ...

I had about 15 catchphrases and all of them had to be checked of by the end of every month. I still have the checklist, but most of the time I do not finish it.

Re: How do you choose what to watch and when?

Lately I've been trying to watch titles I have owned for years but never got around to actually watching. Guilt-watching I suppose?

Sometimes the running time dictates what I watch. If I start a movie on a weeknight at 9:00 I look for something no longer than 90 minutes or so.

If the resale value on an out-of-print title shoots up, I'll often make a point of watching it and then sell it after. This method also doubles as effective testing and quality-control.

Re: How do you choose what to watch and when?

It just happens. This past week I was going to the BD's of Midnight Meat Train and Trasem's The Fall. I have not watched this week yet. I watched a couple of different BD's and 4K discs and a bunch of 4K streaming television. The only time I actually assign something to watch is if I have something to review.

Re: How do you choose what to watch and when?

Very poorly. I spend a lot of time scrolling through countless menus of stuff to watch, and on a rare occasion, I do actually select something to watch. Sometimes having too much choice is a curse and not a blessing. When there was only 10 channels to choose from and no VCR, selecting what we wanted to watch was never a problem. Reminds of the Joe Jackson song, "It's All Too Much":

What shall we do this evening
Send out for some sushi and champagne
Stay in and watch TV
50 channels can't all be the same
Maybe go to a movie
50 films on 50 tiny screens
They say that choice is freedom
I'm so free it's driving me insane

Re: How do you choose what to watch and when?

I don't watch independent or Oscar nominated movies on Fridays and Saturdays and usually save those days for the popcorn or big box office movies.

I like to save the artsy movies for Sunday.

Mon-Thurs I watch the movies I tapes from Directv. I still have movies from saved from 2014 and 2015 I have not watched yet.

I watch at least one movie a week from my collection and the top 10 movies I like all time I try to watch every couple of years or when a new video format comes out so I don't get tired of them.

Re: How do you choose what to watch and when?

I used to spend so much time trying to pick a movie, that by the time I did pick one it would be too late to even watch it. To solve this, I developed a system of selecting 20 movies from a variety of categories (10 categories, 2 movies from each) and would use that as my "movie pool". When I wanted to watch a movie, I would just look at my list and decide what I was in the mood for. Then at the end of each week I would replace the ones I watched during the week. Some categories I use are AFI top 100, Oscar Winners, Horror, Comedy, New Releases, 3D, 4k, etc. Despite the prevalence of smart phones, I still just use a small white board that's with my media collection.

I keep a list of my films in a spreadsheet that's alphabetized by title. I copied the entire spreadsheet and put it in random.org and let it rearrange it all for me randomly. I then copied that spreadsheet into a Word document called "Randomized Disc List." It's 74 pages long. I started watching from the top. If there's one that I really, really don't want to watch when it pops up as next, I skip it, and I can skip several if I feel like it...but I only allow myself to watch a film from that first page. Once one's been watched, I delete it from the list, which brings the next random disc to the bottom, thus keeping the page refreshed.

It works for me.

Other - Specify. Unless it's a new release which I generally watch when I buy it or rent, I have my collection alphabetized and cycle through it. Currently in the "K's"

Re: How do you choose what to watch and when?

It's a tougher question to answer as your collection grows. Never had a real problem picking movies when the collection was in the hundreds, the choice was almost always obvious. You almost have to come up with a formula once your collection numbers in the thousands.

Mood usually dictates the genre and from there I start narrowing down options.

OldBoy 10-06-24 09:23 PM

How do you choose what movie you’re going to watch next?

Is it just random or do you have a method to your madness?

I think mine is pretty random. Whatever I’m in the mood for. I do have a physical queue displays on a shelf under tv, but I don’t know why some of the movies are there. Some are there for a reason, but the others are pretty random, but I also don’t ever watch half of my queue before others take it’s place. The same damn thing I’d do with gaming, as many people know.
