I rely on this thread for ideas. Never fails.

Almost entirely based on our monthly Challenges.

The challenges are a guide most months. I continue to prioritize things which are unwatched. If I look at a shelf, streaming service or my DVD Profiler info and see something that fits those qualifications, I try not to hesitate too much.

Also, I usually have a TV show or two on DVD/BD which I'm going through. Those are usually very accessible and easy to pop in the next disc.

I’m in the mood to watch something and then I watch it.

I find myself watching old Siskel & Ebert episodes on youtube which always reminds me of some long-forgotten gems in my collection.

Seconded. Or I look for underrated gems, movies I thought should have done better at the box office, movies that get a bad rap, or classics I haven't seen yet.

I tend to go by time of year. Summer is for action and blockbuster type films. Fall is for horror. Late fall and winter is when the big epics and sagas get watched like Star Wars and LOTR. Lots of sci-fi during this time too. I take extra time off from work during the holidays so there is more movie time. Christmas time is for Die Hard, The Thing and whatever other movies make sense. Late winter and spring are a mix mosh of genres.

Something like that. :).

Movie theaters are for the latest - usually opening weekend. Everything else is when the mood hits me.

If it's at home it's whenever. If it's a theatrical showing I'd like to get in there within opening weekend up to the second weekend before the movie lose the premium screens.

If it is a Sat from Sept-Dec now I look for the length of the movie first and it can't be 2 hrs or longer on a day with a new SNL episode and 10am NFL games on Sun.

Depends on what's on TCM or the Western Channel at any given moment.

Otherwise a matter of mood: anime, Japanese superhero shows, classic b&w Hollywood, classic b&w Japanese, Hong Kong action, westerns, Tarantino re-watch, etc.

If it's got action, violence, bloodshed, it has to be early when I can best take it. Later on, something calmer, more dialogue-oriented. After dinner, it has to be Academy ratio black-and-white, preferably on VHS, and drama, no action. It's much easier on my eyes. Hi-def is really glaring for me at night, even an Academy ratio b&w movie on TCM after 8PM is a strain.

This is basically my routine for everyday. I try to go for at least 4 films:

-A listed movie from ICM (icheckmovies) (Foreign dramas are usually what's being watched here)
-A (Public Domain) 1-hour film from the 30s or early 40s on youtube or various free app channels (It could be a Western, Comedy, Mystery or Musical)
-An un-watched documentary/featurette on either a disc or streaming. If nothing's found, I'll go for a recent movie on one of the channels I'm paying for
-And I always end the night with a 60s or 70s porno.....Hey, at least I'm honest! :o

You watch approximately 8 hours of movies a day?!

Re: How do you choose what to watch and when?

^About 6. Options 1 & 3 are the ones that stretch to 90 mins to over 120 mins. The 60s/70s X flicks are always under an hour long....Oh, and it's VERY helpful if certain sites like Vimeo and YT allow movies to be shown on a higher speed.
