I've never understood how anything made specifically for streaming and only available to watch that way makes a lot of money.

I suspect this move means that all of the "franchise" movies -- Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, Godzilla vs King Kong, Matrix 4, Dune -- will bomb, and what effect will that have on the prospects for further installments? The Monsterverse was already on shaky ground after KOTM.

How does a TV show make money? It's about "ratings," the number of views, and not raw gross revenue. HBO Max is also likely hoping these premieres will attract new subscribers, and retain them.

Certainly by releasing these new films on a staggered schedule, likely one a month or so, you'll get people who sign up for WW84, and then likely stay subscribed for the year. After all, $15 is about the price of one movie ticket in some areas, and if you get one new "theatrical" film each month, plus all the other content, why not?

I posted this on the other WB thread, but Nolan sounds like he and all filmmakers were blindsided by the WB decision to stream everything. I short, they didn’t know and they should wait until vaccines are out and life starts getting back to normal.

Variety is saying to expect some big movies tentatively scheduled to come out in the next few months to be delayed again. Mainly because COVID is not under control, many big cities are still closed and vaccinations are going at a slog's pace.

Movie theaters in New York city can finally reopen at 25% capacity
There's hope now that Black Widow can actually stay in it's May release. Now LA it's your turn. New York is a very important market that's been closed for 1 year.
I don't know how many of you here live in or near NYC, but this is good news.

I don't think there is any way they keep it for May 7th. Mid-summer/early fall at the earliest. But hey, I'd love to be wrong because I want to see it.

25% capacity sounds like a dream come true to me haha
I hate full theaters and I've avoid opening weekend since 2009 (after an incident when watching Transformers 2 in a full theater).

It's just not realistic at all to make any money. Considering how much money the studios get from tickets, I can't believe showings limited to 50 people is enough to pay for the employees and the rent.
I know there is no good alternative but all of these movie studios and the theaters will just have to take a loss on everything for the time being, I guess.

So this is what's coming out in the next 2 months starting in March for theaters. I'm sure a lot of these movies will be glad to get some New York city money. So can Raya and the last Dragon play in theaters in New York? The arrangement is for both theaters and Disney + this time, not like Mulan? A lot on this list is small indie films.
My county in CA (Orange) is getting pretty close as well to allowing theaters to reopen.

Movie theaters in Los Angeles and Orange County allowed to reopen on Saturday.
Hell yes!! Hopefully I'll be able to see Raya and the Last Dragon
and I'll be seeing Godzilla vs King Kong and Mortal Kombat in the theater too.

Re: COVID-19 Virus -- Movie related news
With the announcement today that LA movie theaters can open next week (the 19th), I think it's looking pretty good that Black Widow can keep it's May 7th date. Chapek said the other day that Disney fully intends to keep it a theatrical release.
Just looking at the release schedule for wide releases for late April and early May, it's pretty light. I only see Mortal Kombat, The Asset and Black Widow as notable releases.
Seating is going to be limited, but hypothetically, if it's a 15-20 screen theater, they could just have Black Widow take up most of the screens & showings in the day. You can still have the others like Asset, Mortal Kombat and even Godzilla vs King Kong and a few other smaller movies if need be to fill screens. So unlike last Fall, you don't have to rely on filling screens with old movies that no one is going to watch. I think there's enough new movies from March and April to help fill screens come May 7th. And Black Widow can still make money.

LA county theaters are officially open this week.
Already got a few tickets:
This week: Chaos Walking on Wednesday (yeah I know the reviews aren't great, but I just wanted to see something on reopening day)
and Raya and the Last Dragon Dolby on Friday
on the 31st: Godzilla vs Kong
