Has anybody mentioned Taika Waititi's statement of The Academy acknowledging that the Dolby Theater sits on Native American ancestral lands?
Of all the looney left blather on the show, this was the second weirdest to me (after Phoenix using his speech time to complain about milk).

Congratulations to Parasite. An excellent film. Would have also loved if pain & Glory won, it's also excellent film with a career best performance by Antonio Banderas.

Thought this was a pretty good show, but I missed having a host, however the quality set of movies this year seemed to help. Although at times it seemed like I was watching the Grammy's...
Just caught Parasite on Saturday, pretty incredible run this year, hard to believe it's the first Foreign language winner to win Best Picture, but you got to start somewhere, maybe Netflix being an international presence now with a ton of shows and movies in subtitles actually helped pave the way in some small way for this film to win big this year.

I remember they used to do it. After Clint Eastwood won for Unforgiven, he presented it the next year to Steven Spielberg for Schindler's List, who presented it the next year to Robert Zemeckis for Forrest Gump, who presented it the next year to Mel Gibson for Braveheart, who presented it the next year to Anthony Minghella for The English Patient, and then that broke the chain when the next year it was random Warren Beatty presenting the award to James Cameron for Titanic, and the next year it's Kevin Costner who presents the award to Spielberg for Saving Private Ryan, and then we're back in business again when Spielberg returns the next year to present it to Sam Mendes for American Beauty.

What the hell do people who make long rambling statements in their acceptance speeches think people who are listening are actually going to DO after hearing the speech? Does Phoenix actually think people are going to mass convert to veganism just because the actor who played a psychopathic killer in JOKER urged them to?

American actors seem to be afraid that if it is obvious they prepared and practiced a "winner's speech" then they will come off looking bad. But rambling through some mental talking points in the biggest spotlight of your career does not make you look particularly good.

And the downward trend continues...
https://variety.com/2020/tv/news/osc...20-1203499199/
The 2020 Oscars ceremony was watched by the smallest audience the awards show has ever received.
23.6 million viewers tuned in on Sunday night to see “Parasite” sweep to a surprise victory. That’s a 20%, 6 million viewer drop-off from last year. The Academy’s second hostless show in a row scored a 5.3 rating among adults 18-49 in the fast national ratings, a 31% dip from 2019.
For comparison, last year’s Oscars delivered a 7.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 29.6 million viewers. That viewership figure, while up 12% from 2018, represented the second smallest audience ever for an Academy Awards telecast at the time. 2018 delivered the previous smallest viewership tally with 26.5 million viewers.

No big name movies, no host. Not sure what was expected.

One thing I really liked about the show this year was the acting categories using montages of the performances rather than “say actor’s name, show a clip; say actors name, show a clip, etc.
I thought the way they did it this year felt a lot more natural.

I remember seeing stories last few years saying the academy has been inviting a more diverse younger group to become members. Maybe that has resulted in Parasite nabbing BP.

^ That's a really interesting article. There have now been five consecutive "upsets" in the Best Picture category (meaning that the betting favorite didn't win the award).
Has some intriguing theories as to why that is

I liked this as well. It made the clip package much more interesting to see how they pieced it together.

If anyone reads that article that Decker posted, and then wants to explain the ODDS thing to me, that would be educational.
This was an unbelievable development—but not just because of the card snafu. Moonlight was already a long shot; for it to win at all was shocking. La La Land came into the 2017 Academy Awards as a juggernaut, having won most of the big guild awards in the run-up to the ceremony. With minus-450 betting odds to win the Best Picture trophy, it had an implied win probability north of 80 percent, making it a massive favorite. Moonlight, meanwhile, carried plus-430 odds, for a win probability under 20 percent.

-450 odds means that you would have to bet $450 on La La Land to win $100 if it won Best Picture. +430 meant that if you had bet $100 on Moonlight, you would win $430 back on your bet, or $530 back total, a little better than 5-1 odds (under 20% win probability like it says there)

One of the worst shows I remember seeing in 30 years.
For a show about the movies they spent more time trotting out music stars and music acts with almost no appreciation of classic movies. Golden age stars like Kirk Douglas and Doris Day get nothing more than a photo. (Nice to hear Tom Hanks give a Spartacus shout out) A montage about songs in movies barely extends past the 80's. The Lifetime Achievement Awards, already marginalized, now can't be bothered to show excerpts from the recipients speeches. The heavy handed ploy of stacking the show with trendy presenters in a desperate attempt to attract an audience. The constant soap boxing on gender as though there should be a quota on who gets nominated in order to fulfill their ideal formula of equality. The Oscars have gone so far downhill. When the best segment celebrating movies comes from a Google ad the Oscars need to get a clue.
