Rank the Star Wars Films
With The Mandalorian currently one of the biggest shows in the world and The Rise of Skywalker about a week away, now's one of the most exciting times in the 42-year old franchise's history. Use the thread below to rank the series installments in your preference and feel free to give a sentence or two explaining your reasoning! Let's try to keep it fun and on-topic, not sniping each other over opinions.
And check out DVD Talk's interview with costumer Kelly Cercone, one of The Mandalorian's costumers and major Marvel Cinematic Universe crew member!

I'm currently in the middle of a series re-watch, so I'll provide my own ranking when I'm done ;-)

Re: Rank the Star Wars films
So far, my rankings would be release order.
The first two films are classics, the third a step down but still above average film. All since have been increasingly mediocre, but still watchable because they’re connected to the first two.

- Star Wars, Empire (tie)
- RotJ
- Rogue One (wasn't sure if we're just doing the Episode films)
- TFA
- Last Jedi
- RotS
- TPM
- AotC
The Force Awakens was very much the original film with a new coat of paint and some new bells and whistles but it got the tone right and had Harrison Ford coming back as Han Solo, something we never thought we'd see. The Last Jedi went hard in the other direction and gave us a Star Wars story that was a critique on the franchise and fandom...which obviously didn't sit well with a lot of people. As for me, I didn't mind that approach too much and thought it was a decent enough movie.
Revenge of the Sith was easily the best of the worst (aka the Prequels). It had the confrontation that the previous movies were building toward (albeit clumsily) and also had General Grievous and the Battle of Kashyyyk to make it watchable. The Phantom Menace had Jake Lloyd (sorry, bud, you were in over your head), eyeball searing CGI, midi-chlorians, and of course JJB. But it also gave us Qui-Gon Jinn and it *didn't* have that horrendous Padme-Anakin romance that sank Attack of the Clones like a boat anchor. Also, Obi-Wan wasn't a moron in Episode I like he was in the subsequent movie.
For me, the Star Wars theatrical releases have had more good than bad installments. Abrams showed he knew what he was doing with Episode VII (despite riffing heavily off the 1977 film), so I'm hoping that Rise of Skywalker will wind up under the good column.

The Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
Return of the Jedi
Couldn't care less about the rest after not being able to get through The Phantom Menace because of how bad it was.

The Phantom Menace - it wasn’t that bad or boring. Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor and Darth Maul - second coolest villain imo.
and I didn’t care for the rest.

Re: Rank the Star Wars Films
- Star Wars
- Empire
- Revenge of the Sith Anakin goes dark, but does not make me cringe as much as the first two films.
- Return of the Jedi Ewoks bumps this down some
- Attack of the Clones Yoda plus many other jedis in action .But damn that love story and Hayden Christensen.
- The Phantom Menace Damn that kid and Jar Jar and the story. But had Qui-gon and Darth Maul and some good actions.
- The Force Awakens I really enjoyed the beginning. But do not care for most of the new characters.
- The Last Jedi
- Solo First SW movie that I turned off and was a chore for me to watch to the end a few months latter.
Going to have to watch Rogue One again before I rank it.

5. The Phantom Menace
6. Attack of the Clones
7. The Force Awakens
Didn't care for Solo or Rogue One and absolutely HATED The Last Jedi

The first group are classics. The second group could be in any order depending in my mood. All are flawed but have redeeming qualities. Ep IX will go a long way towards solidifying VII and VIII's placement. The prequels are the prequels and those other two are fine but I could not care less about them. Product for the sake of product.
