Huh, I saw that release earlier and immediately knew it was the SEs (runtimes are listed if you look) but I didn't realize the commentaries have been stripped out. That means they've had to re-master the discs. So the idea that they're just dumping old stock doesn't hold up, these must be a new stampers for the pressing plants.

I see it as 67 . . . from a certain point of view.

So . . . not the original original trilogy?

It was more than just artwork circulating. Amazon had it up and available for pre-order (now the page does not exist).

Just a quick heads up to STAR WARS fans today: This artwork has been circulating on social media this morning, with a claim that a remastered Original Trilogy Blu-ray release is happening NEXT MONTH on April 7. It’s 100% AI-generated BS, so don’t get excited. (Disney’s @TheBessMan can confirm.) Keep in mind, the actual anniversary is NEXT YEAR, when an official theatrical re-release has already been announced. So any kind of disc release this April is nonsensical (and wishful thinking at best). Just wanted to clarify; the Death Star plans are NOT in the main computer system.
.

I don't know what he means by "AI Generated." The artwork is the same as the official Disney release in the UK:

I think he's speaking out of his ass. He hasn't gotten official word, so he's speculating about it being fake.

Gizomodo/io9 "confirmed" it yesterday:
https://gizmodo.com/before-the-origi...ain-2000728973

This week, several Star Wars-themed websites noticed that Amazon had a preorder for a brand new Blu-ray release of the original trilogy: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. The sites also noticed that runtimes lined up with the Special Edition versions of the film. Those George Lucas edits that have long been the only way to officially watch Star Wars for almost 30 years. It seemed like a weird move so close to that highly anticipated original re-release, but io9 can confirm it’s real and it’s the Special Editions. Here is the box art for the release, which is coming on April 7 and costs $68.

If you search the Amazon URL on Google, they still show a cached version of it.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...6f55054c8d.jpg

Internet Archive unfortunately didn't save a snapshot before it was taken down.

Walmart sill has a listing up though, "Sold and shipped by Walmart.com," so not just a 3rd party seller listing:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Star-Wars...re/19680464652

Edit: I looked up the UPC on the back cover image on some UPC search sites, and they bring up listings for the Blu-ray set;
https://go-upc.com/search?q=043396648777
https://www.scandit.com/upc-lookup/

Edit 2: OK, one more thing. Searching the UPC in Google brings up a lot of listings on various record store sites, for some reason. It seems to have been in a a distributor's list that got sent out to a lot of stores, who automatically added it. All have the same cover image, same MSRP of $67.99, etc. Maybe there was some sort of flag to not make a public listing yet that got missed, and only Amazon took it down due to the publicity its listing got.

Quick update: This is apparently a legit BD release, BUT only a catalog re-promotion. All 3 trilogies are being re-released on Blu-ray next month ahead of May the 4th. No new remastering or extras of any kind, just a re-release of the EXISTING Blu-rays. So there you go. @thedigitalbits.bsky.social

It's good he got verified info, but he probably should've done that before his first post. At least there's some new info: the other 2 trilogies are also getting box set re-releases. I'm guessing they're bare-bones as well.

I'm glad Bill Hunt is here to explain things that were obvious to all of us when we first saw them.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

OK, so I assumed that the UPCs for the sets were assigned sequentially, and searched the neighboring numbers, and I discovered these trilogy sets are getting a DVD release as well.

Here's the full set of UPC codes:

Star Wars: Prequel Trilogy (DVD)
043396648746

Star Wars: Prequel Trilogy (Blu-ray)
043396648753

Star Wars: Original Trilogy (DVD)
043396648760

Star Wars: Original Trilogy (Blu-ray)
043396648777

Star Wars: Sequel Trilogy (DVD)
043396648784

Star Wars: Sequel Trilogy (Blu-ray)
043396648791

Walmart has listings for all 3 DVD sets, but not for the other 2 Blu-ray sets, yet.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Star-Wars...re/19688655582

Edit: Cover art for the other two sets:

Unsurprisingly, they match the cover art of the UK releases from a few years ago.

I was gonna say - what am I missing here? I guess nothing.

I heard the original unedited versions might come out on disc. Hmmm.

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

There is really no point to this release.

2027 is the 50th anniversary and most would assume they would do something next year. And the original trilogy already has a 4K and digital release (yes, I know it's not the locked away original release)

And you can still buy the old FOX Blu-Ray box set with all the extras right? I still have it.

I suppose if Hunt doesn't get an official release from the studio or distributor, he automatically called BS without looking into it further. I know some of you think there are way better sources for physical media news than him.

milo bloom 03-04-26 08:10 PM

Re: The General Star Wars Discussion Thread

It’s clearly just a product refresh for retailers. Odd that the commentaries aren’t listed because that means they would have made new master discs to press these.

But otherwise it’s kinda interesting to see Disney keeping physical media going.

‘Oh right, next year is the 50th anniversary. If we were ever going to get the original unedited films in 4K or even Blu-ray it would be then. I doubt it though. Honestly, I’m past it now. The editions we do have are fine overall, sans a few terrible changes/additions.
