Re: Rutger Hauer Dead at 75

I broke my leg as a kid, spent the entire summer watching and rewatching and rewatching and rewatching a VHS tape made by my uncle with Star Wars ANH, Ghostbusters, Wargames, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Ladyhawke all on one tape. PQ was terrible but serviceable. Probably watched them all dozens and dozens of times. RIP Mr. Hauer.

Same here. Blind Fury and Wedlock were my introduction to Rutger Hauer. I didn’t see Ladyhawke or Blade Runner until years later.

Re: Rutger Hauer Dead at 75

About 15-20 years ago I tried to track down and watch a lot of Verhoeven's early Dutch work. Since he was in pretty much all the movies, that also meant I watched some of Hauer's early Dutch work. Always a talented and interesting actor who probably deserved to be a bigger star than he became in the US.

On the flip side, looking at his filmography it doesn't look like he turned down many offers which is not always a good thing.

Nobody mentioned Blind Side, an HBO original movie from the 90's. Great villain in that as well.

As long as people will be watching Blade Runner, he will never be forgotten.

One of the greatest scenes in cinema history from Ladyhawke

He had some fine performances. If Roy Batty had been done badly, that last scene would have been corny, and Bladerunner would have been forgotten.

I loved him in that role. Damn, I want to see that movie now and it's not even on blu-ray. Loved the scene where he laughs about dismembering another family and then tells the kid that he is going to do the same to him.

Just one of those names I always heard as a kid - The hitcher was my intro to him - was very happy when I found out he was in the first sin city as well.

Respect.

RIP

Shit, I was away and didn't hear about this. He was one of the greats. Too bad so few of the roles he was offered were not commensurate with his acting abilities.

R.I.P.

Like many others here, I absolutely loved his work.

I remember feverishly tracking down Momentum Pictures' (UK) DVD release of The Hitcher (1986) when it was first released because it was one of the best overall packages given to the film (at the time).

Reminds me that I still need to see Hobo with a Shotgun. Also really liked his performance in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

Must have been a T-180 tape. 9 hours of tape at the EP or SLP (slow) speed. Those were pretty rare, as I recall.
What a considerate uncle.

I believe it was. Like I said, PQ was pretty rough, but I watched the shit out of that tape. … and he was, RIP.

For PAL VHS, T-180s were the most common and there were also T-240s (12 hours in SLP!). Was a bummer going from that to T-120/T-160 when I moved to the States.
