Re: What happened to the Erotic thriller?

I worked in a small video store when I was 15/16. The owner had two stores and the second location was known for a well stocked porn selection. My location had none only the borderline soft core erotic thrillers that Vidmark pumped out. Our back room was filled with SNES games. I always got a kick out of the dudes that would come in, spot and make a b line for that room. Seconds later they’d slink out disappointed.
Late nights I’d bring friends in and we’d fill our faces with peanut butter cups and air heads while watching Shannon Tweed.

Pretty easy answer here, like any other genre the audience got tired of it and they stopped being profitable. Noir, Biblical Epics, Breakdancing movies, Westerns, space operas, post-apocalyptic teens, etc.

Don't forget Jeff Conaway!

"Jeff Conaway and Shari Belafonte-Harper play a deadly game of cat-and-mouse in 'Murder Most Moist.'"

"Jeff Conaway is a vigilante who stalks by night in 'Dark Underpants.'"

"Jeff Conaway is up to his mouth in murder in 'French Pistol.'"

"Jeff Conaway is a college professor whose secret life catches up with him in 'Death Spank.'"

"Jeff Conaway and Morgan Fairchild are 'The Crotchless Killers.'"

"Jeff Conaway is a crazed cult leader in 'The Waco Panty Raid.'"

My favorite movie from that era was called Dark Secrets I think it came out in 96 or 97. I also liked the Die Hard ripoff called Skyscraper staring Anna Nicole Smith.

Re: What happened to the Erotic thriller?

They're still being made, but as others have noted, there are a LOT of genres in the mid-tier budget range that just don't draw audiences to cinemas anymore, so there's less of them being made overall.
Even with that being the case, a flick like Red Sparrow (made for a much higher budget than your average erotic thriller, I'm sure) made like $150m at the box office last year.
These films are still being made, just in lower frequency like anything else, and some (like RS) are lucky to make some money, but most end up in the Netflix, Vudu, and Hulu catalogs.

Amazon Chief Jennifer Salke
Feb. 2019

You’ve recently started making movies that will go direct to the service, and not play in theaters. What can you tell us about them?

Jason Blum is doing eight movies for us. And then I'm working with Nicole Kidman on this slate of sexy, date-night movies that no one's making anymore, like No Way Out or Cruel Intentions. Those kind of, "I need to stay home and just drink wine with my girlfriend, or my boyfriend, husband, and watch this." This is really Nicole's thing. When I met with her my second week in the job, we made the first-look deal out of this lunch. She was like, "Where are the hot, sexy movies?" We had a meeting of the minds on it, and I'm like, "Let's just get those movies directly, where we could release over the summer." Every Saturday night, one of those comes out, and then you create some bingeability and a marketing story behind it. But then, Will Packer just called me, and he was like, "I have a small horror movie. It could fit into your direct-to-service Blum thing." Send it over. Great, I want it to see it, because we can feed those lanes. And then the YA space is gonna be the other one. There could be 20 direct-to-service movies managed within a given year also at least.

Re: What happened to the Erotic thriller?

I believe is more of studios wanting movies to be PG-13 for the box office. I remember seeing recently on Starz what was supposed to be an erotic thriller called Obsession, with Idris Elba, Beyonce and Ali Larter. My impression was that the studio refused to make it a true R erotic thriller so Beyonce fans could attend and see the film and have a successful box office, which it did as it had a $20M budget and made $29M the first weekend and a total of $79M during its run.

I thought Shannon Tweed was one of the better erotic thriller actresses from the 90s. Many of her collaborations with Andrew Stevens were guilty pleasures.

It was called "In the heat of passion" I have a bootleg DVD of it.

She was in her early 50s when she made and honestly for an older woman, she was pretty hot in it.

Yeah she was hot af. Seemed like Skinemax had a new movie with her every month or so.

Sharon Stone started getting big paydays after Basic Instinct and films like Sliver were POS flops. Late 80s, early 90s they were really pushing the envelope, cranking these things out. Now it's like one or two of these types of movies a year if that.

Sally Kirkland pushed Roger Corman to give it a theatrical release (1992, I believe) in New York. I went to see it and she was there. Most of the audience seemed to be actor friends of hers that she corraled into attending. I was there because I actually wanted to see what Corman's latest productions were like. I chatted with her a bit. She was pleased that at least one audience member came on his own, without her nudging.
