Good one!

--------

Bad Boys > Bad Boys II

I've enjoyed II and it's packed with action but it's too damn long.

I think there should be separate consideration for sequels that bring back the original actors. Any movie sequel where the original stars don't come back is just a (sometimes glorified) DTV-quality cash grab, hoping to cash in on the name and not much else. That isn't the same thing as something where the cast comes back and you expect the product to sort of live up to the original (or at least not tarnish the memory of the original so much).

I'll cast a vote for The Two Jakes. Chinatown is in my Top 10 All-Time and I was so stoked that this got made-- until I watched it once.. and only once.

edit : And while I was writng that inri222 beat me to the punch.

"Hey, Sean Connery came back for Highlander II, that seems weird but I'm sure there's a good reason...". Yeah, I agree with the bringing back the cast part, the worst thing about seeing a bad sequel is having decent expectations for it.

The Matrix Reloaded

This list is solid like a rock. Enthusiastic support for Matrix Reloaded which had “oh shit how do we cash in on the success of The Matrix?” burned into every frame.

Smokey and the Bandit II.

Fucking horrible movie.

Yes there is a ton of DTV sit but this was a big budget follow-up to a box office smash.

I actually thought the third movie was decent, but I've only seen the first three movies.

Any sequel that was made for DTV.

Chinatown is a masterpiece. Don't know what the hell Jack Nicholson was thinking.

Blues Brothers 2000, although in fairness I absolutely refuse to watch it.

Surprised nobody has tried to pull the latest SW Trilogy into this.... ;)

Splash Too. Straight to TV. Thank the Elder Gods that it hasn't shown up on video AFAIK. And if it did, please don't post a link. Think of the humanity!

Most of the obvious ones have been mentioned already. I'll add

An American Werewolf in Paris (loose sequel)
Basic Instinct 2

Also, pretty sure there's some level of agreement Temple of Doom should be in here somewhere.

Re: worst degradation in quality from original to sequel

Temple of Doom doesn't belong in this discussion. It wasn't as good as Raiders but few films are. ToD is still a solid movie.

Temple of Doom has flaws, but is an excellent movie.

Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. No comparison to its masterpiece predecessor.

Batman Begins to The Dark Knight. We go from a good Batman origin story based on the comic books to a low rent Heat rip off. Then it is topped off with the silliest movie ever made with Rises.

While it's nowhere near as good as the first, I think Grease 2 is underrated. It's very watchable with a lot of fun songs and performances.

I was gonna say the same thing. While the stars lack the charisma of the originals, it's still watchable. And a young Michelle Pfeiffer singing and dancing is kind of a treat. Yes, I own it.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. This is only my opinion of course as I realize this sequel has many fans that regard it as a masterpiece. It just missed the mark for me.

A few months back, some cable channel was showing Grease and Grease 2 back-to-back. I watched both (hadn't seen G2 in well over a decade, maybe two) and literally SECONDS into G2, you could feel all the soul leaving the room. Grease isn't exactly deep or sublime, but it had a certain heart and swing to it (groove? meaning?) that the vapid sequel lacks in abundance.

This is what happens when you let the choreographer from the first film direct the sequel.

Hokeyboy 12-20-18 11:57 AM

Re: worst degradation in quality from original to sequel

I don't know if it's the WORST degradation in quality, but in terms of creative cast and crew being retained from the first film, and expectations being through the roof? Incredibles --> Incredibles 2.

The first film is IMO flawless and brilliant. The sequel is a perfunctory but mostly empty shell.

I'm always told I'm full of shit when I say Begins is far superior to both sequels.
